Christian Union Put On Probation

Findings of investigation into Christian Union are revealed

An investigation into the Christian Union has found them in breach of Union policy for their position on female speakers, as revealed by The Tab last year.

As a result of this finding, it was announced at last night’s Student Council meeting the CU are to serve a probationary period until July this year as punishment.

Should the Union fail to comply with any UBU requirements within their period of probation, further sanctions will be taken which could include disaffiliation.

The report, undertaken by UBU officers Alessandra Berti and Martha West, found the CU had been cooperative throughout the investigation and, although they had been in breach of Union policy, they had rectified the matter swiftly after complaints were received.

Upon revealing the CU would face no further sanctions, many students present expressed dissatisfaction with what they perceived to be a lenient punishment.

One concern which was raised was the CU’s statement on December 5th had been deliberately ‘economical with words’ and had failed to clarify whether unaccompanied women would be allowed to speak.

After some prompting, Matt Oliver, President of the Christian Union, apologised for any confusion and clarified the statement applied to all women, unaccompanied or not.He went on to say a female headline speaker has already been booked for an upcoming CU event.
