If there’s one thing Newcastle’s got besides cheap nights out and puffer jackets, it’s a sports culture like none other.

Here’s a list of all incoming captains for this year so you know who to look out for.

Rugby Union

Dan Nutton, 2nd year, Rural Studies (Men’s 1st Team Captain)

Where do you live? Jesmond.

What’s your favourite night? Wednesday. The guys have to earn their celebrations.

What are you currently lifting in the gym? Bench 110kg, deadlift 180kg and squat 170kg.

Do you have any pre-match rituals? I only spray deodorant in my left armpit before I play.

Tell us something about you others won’t know: I can drink a gallon of milk in 10 seconds.

Sophie Slater, 2nd year, History (Women’s 1st Team Captain)

Where do you live? Jesmond.

What’s your favourite night? Wednesday night (Floho).

What are you currently lifting in the gym? Max squat is 107kg and bench 50kg.

Tell us something about you others won’t know: My first game for Newcastle I fractured my arm so I now have permanent plates and pins from my elbow to shoulder.

Football

Joe Hamblin, 3rd year, English Literature (Men’s 1st Team Captain)

What’s your favourite night? Soho then MSA.

What are you currently lifting in the gym? Bench 80kg, squat 50kg (the boy hates a leg day).

Do you have any pre-match rituals? Visting the physio.

Hollie Joyce, 3rd year, Economics & Management (Club Captain)

Athletics

Cameron Cutts, 2nd year, Civil Engineering (Men’s Captain)

Where do you live? Jesmond.

What’s your favourite night? Soho then flares.

What are you currently lifting in the gym? Bench 80kg, deadlift 180kg and squat 125kg.

Do you have any pre-match rituals? Listening to some Tchami.

Tell us something about you others won’t know: I’m proof that no matter how amateur a runner you are at the beginning of uni (I didn’t make it past the heats of BUCS in my first year) you can get to a stage where you’re running against some of the best at uni level. I’d also say I’m 2nd time captain, 3rd time fresher.

Poppy Briggs, International Business MA (Women’s Captain)

Where do you live? Jesmond.

What’s your favourite night? Bierkeller.

What are you currently lifting in the gym? I deadlift 55kg, squat 50kg and hip thrust 60kg.

Do you have any pre-match rituals? I have to eat fajitas for dinner the night before and I always wear my hair the same (I put two half braids on top of my head then tie it up).

Tell us something about you others won’t know: I was cast to do a voice over for a program on Nickelodeon but the funding got cut. I also tried my first ever orange at age 20.

Basketball

Courtney Strait, Cross-Cultural Communication, Postgraduate (Women’s 1st Team Captain)

Where do you live? City centre.

What’s your favourite night? Anywhere on a saturday.

What are you currently lifting in the gym? Bench 130 lbs and squat 250 lbs.

Tell us something about you others won’t know: I have been to 15 countries – I played basketball at Truman State University in America, where I was the team captain. I plan to play Basketball professionally after I’m done at Newcastle.

Lacrosse

Luke Ramsbottom, 3rd year, Geography (Men’s 1st Team Co-Captain)

Where do you live? West Jesmond.

What are you currently lifting in the gym? Deadlift 125kg, bench 70kg and squat 120kg.

Do you have any pre-match rituals? Having a bit of toast.

Tell us something about you others won’t know: I used to have a YouTube channel doing magic tricks.

Jack Clohessy, 2nd year, Law (Men’s 1st Team Co-Captain)

Where do you live? Jesmond.

What’s your favourite night? Sports Night Wednesday or Cosmic Ballroom on Tuesday.

What are you currently lifting in the gym? Bench 90kg.

Do you have any pre-match rituals? I always wear the same pair of boxers.

Tell us something about you others won’t know: I once met the Arctic Monkeys backstage trying to find a medical tent.

What are you currently lifting in the gym? Bench 105kg and deadlift 180kg.

Do you have any pre-match rituals? Listening to ‘Taking Care of Business’ by BTO.

Tell us something about you others won’t know: I used to play international swing-ball.

Megan Barry, 3rd year, Physiological Sciences (Women’s captain)

Where do you live? Jesmond.

What’s your favourite night? Soho, Flares, then Sinners.

Tell us something about you others won’t know: I used to play for GB Junior Europeans, and attained bronze and silver medals. I’m extremely injury prone but have never broken a bone in my body.
