Meet the people using Prelinks to nail nights out on the Toon

They swear by it

| UPDATED

With the flyering, Facebook spam and club promoters, finding the best nights out in Newcastle can be a challenge. This is where Prelinks comes in.

Having launched in Newcastle last January, Prelinks gives you a weekly breakdown of club nights, one-off gigs and live artists, as well as the low-down on the type of music, location and how many people are going.

After taking on Manchester and Leeds this freshers, Prelinks is now even bigger and better. Armed with an update showing you which of your Facebook friends are going, finding the best nights has never been easier.

Once you’ve ‘joined’ an event, you’ll be able to see the profiles of other people who are going. Then you can swipe, match and chat, all before you walk into the club.

We spoke to some of the biggest movers and shakers in Newcastle about how using the app has changed the way they hit the Toon.

Laurel Pymm, second year, International Business Management

Laurel’s favourite night on the Toon is Waikiki Tuesdays at House of Smith. She said: “Nightlife in Newcastle is mental – there’s so much more going on here compared with other cities, which is perfect because everyone knows us Geordies like a good party.

Laurel reckons Prelinks is the remedy to this. She said: “Having a list of Newcastle’s events in one spot means it’s the best way to choose where to go out, and it’s what I use to make sure I don’t miss out when a DJ or artist I like is in the Toon.”

When it comes to meeting people on a night out in Newcastle, Laurel says, “Some people are definitely better at it than others – a couple of trebs will help though!

“What makes Prelinks such a stand out app is that it is solely for students, and is less intense than going on a date with a complete stranger. It gives you more choice of who you can meet before the night even starts. I’ve had great experiences on Prelinks – I’ve found some class nights and met some absolutely hilarious people.”

Alex Stoneham, second year, Quantity Surveying

Alex knows a thing or two about partying in Newcastle. The second year heads up the Northumbria DJ Society, so is obviously well-versed in what’s going on. He said: “With the energy of first semester and student life, I tend to hit the Toon about four times a week.”

Alex recently launched a new tech house and techno night at Grey’s club, called Boja (the Croatian word for colour). The DJ said: “It was a huge success and we’re so happy about it – it’s a place where everyone who’s fond of house music can come and share their obsession. Boja isn’t a dark sweaty rave or a niche night, it’s a place where people come to boogie and let their hair down and party.

“Our launch brought everything we hoped for, and we look forward to putting on a consistent night that hits the spot every week.”

As head of DJ Soc, Alex thinks Prelinks is changing the way nights get the word out. He added: “When it comes to flyering, so much stuff gets printed, but whenever I get handed one, it goes straight in the bin. On the other hand, Prelinks is genuinely trying to do something good for nightlife in the Toon. It gives students more of a choice of where to go based on their tastes and the crowd going to the events.”

When asked about chances of meeting people on a night out, Alex wasn’t in the best of spirits. He said: “They aren’t great, if last night was anything to go by – my success was zero! It’s difficult because as a guy, you don’t know how to approach girls without coming on too strong

“Even though I go to a lot of events and am single, I am the most awkward person when it comes to trying to meet someone in a club. With Prelinks, it gives you that opportunity to see who’s going, and when you meet, there’s no pressure. Other apps are all about the chat online, but Prelinks’ focus is the eventual meeting in person. Plus, having a swipe at pres definitely gets you up for the night ahead.”

Charlie Wodehouse, graduate, History

Charlie, on the left

We asked Charlie, Prelinks’ City Manager on the Toon, why she would use Prelinks. She said: “ Having everything in one place to be able to choose from is way better than searching through Facebook. Plus, everyone loves a cheeky swipe.”

Charlie wishes there had been an app like Prelinks around when she was at university. The grad said: “I went out a lot, but my housemates didn’t necessarily appreciate my love of hip hop and RnB, so it would normally be just me wanting to go out. It would have been great to see which of my friends were going so I could have ditched my house-loving housemates for a night out.”

Charlie highlights how simple Prelinks makes meeting someone on a night out. She said: “There’s no need for a load of online chat, it’s cool that you can just bump into a match as you’re both heading to the same night. It’s great to recognise someone when you’re out and it’s definitely a positive that the app is only for students.”

Now taking Newcastle nightlife in her stride, Charlie said: “There is almost too much going on in Newcastle and with no easy way of finding events on Facebook, it’s nice having them all in one place on Prelinks. It usually lists around seven events each night, ranging from those weeklies you’ve heard all about to one-off gigs – there’s definitely something for everyone.”

Choon Tan, second year, Applied Sports and Exercise

If you don’t know who Choon is, then you’ve been going out all wrong. Not only is he always hunting down the best nights around, you might recognise him as the smallest body builder in the entire UK.

“I go out approximately 3-5 times a week, which definitely requires a lot of juggling and time management. Nevertheless, I find the nightlife in Newcastle to be delightful as well as exhilarating.” You heard it here first.

Choon’s favourite night is Dirtiz at Perdu on Wednesdays, saying: “It’s where dreams come true.”

On the meeting people game in Newcastle, Choon said: “If you’re looking to meet a special someone on a night out, it shouldn’t come as too much of a challenge, as long as you’re open to meeting a lot of different people. After all, Newcastle is notorious for going out on the pull.”

In Choon’s eyes, Prelinks is the perfect addition to the Toon nightlife scene. He said: “It is generally students who go out regularly that are on Prelinks. What makes it stand out from other apps is the fact that you can meet new people in a casual environment – you’ll be going out there anyway, so there’s absolutely no pressure. Prelinks are offering an opportunity for people to get to know each other before the night, which is frankly an exceptional idea.”

When asked how he uses the app, Choon didn’t beat around the bush, saying: “My personal experience with Prelinks has been meeting people for pre-parties and occasional one night stands. ”
