Egerton to Granville: A guide on where to live in Fallowfield

Please be close to the bus stop

Generations of second and third years have passed through the streets of Fallowfield.

Thoughts of living in the city didn’t even cross their minds.

Fallowfield can define everything in your uni experience – your friends, your social life and your personality.

It’s not as glamorous as Didsbury, but what it lacks in glamour Fallowfield quickly makes up for in fun.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THEM

Amherst Road

We get it, you’re pretty loose. Amherst Road is the place to live if you like people knowing you have fun.

Congratulations – you know a lot of people, can DJ a bit and know how to feng shui a grimy basement.

Distance from Sainsbury’s: 8 minute walk

Distance from uni: 25 minute journey (walk and bus)

Distance from High Street: 36 minute journey (walk and bus)

Booth Avenue

Distance from Sainsbury’s: 9 minute walk

Distance from uni: 22 minute journey (walk and bus)

Distance from city centre: 34 minute journey (walk and bus)

Egerton Road

Also known as Edgyton Road, it’s just off Wilmslow road.

Dwellers of “Edgyton Rd”, have a lot to live up to. Oh you live on Egerton? You must be a proper no-nonsense Manchester student.

Egerton Road is a classic example of the class and beauty that can be found in the depths of South Manchester, with it’s delightfully standard red brick houses and random alleyways.

Distance from Sainsbury’s: 5 minute walk

Distance from uni: 27 minute bus journey (walk and bus)

Distance from High Street: 36 minute journey (walk and bus)

Standish Road

Sainsbury’s is literally on your door step, so stocking up on food takes absolute minimal effort. Either that or you like the idea of being seen.

Although you’ll never run out of food, you might run out of expensive electrical items as Standish is infamous for theft.

Distance from Sainsbury’s: 2 minute walk

Distance from uni: 15 minute bus journey (walk and bus)

Distance from city centre: 32 minute journey (walk and bus)

Granville Road

The student mecca is next to McDonalds, Chicken King, Sainsbury’s, Ram & Shackle, The Friendship Inn, Spoons, Nando’s, as well as being just steps away from the bus stop.

Most of the houses on this student road have generously sized basements.

It’s just the right location – not quite in the suburbia of Withington, but if you live there, you’ve managed to position yourself a tasty distance away from mainstream Fallowfield, meaning you get the pleasure of the bus before it’s busy.

I don’t know if you’ve heard but Granville folk go out a lot, so the Maccys, Chicken King and Spoons are key for that hangover they tend to have about five days a week.

Distance from Sainsbury’s: 5 minute walk

Distance from uni: 14 minute walk journey (walk and bus)

Distance from High Street: 32 minute journey (walk and bus)

Derby Road

You think you’re too good for Egerton do you? You’ll be witness to the occasional bizarre community street party and some pretty huge houses.

If you are getting on the booze, it will be a tin of own-brand lager, and it will be enjoyed with a slightly unkempt haircut and a winter coat indoors. Derby is dangerously close to the weird and wonderful establishment that is The Ram and that’s why you love it.

Distance from Sainsbury’s: 9 minute walk

Distance from uni : 17 minute walk journey (walk and bus)

Distance from city centre: 37 minute bus journey (walk and bus)

Brailsford Road

Brailsford is a popular second-year living destination as it’s close to Owens Park, fairly central, and relatively cheap.

It’s not quite close enough to the bus stop, so be prepared for about a five minute walk. Also it might just be us but the road looks a bit too much like Coronation Street for our liking.

On the plus side, it’s right by Sainsbury’s so your fridge will never be empty, and you’ll probably be less tempted to splash out on takeaways than if you were to live on Granville.

Distance from Sainsbury’s: 9 minute walk

Distance from uni: 15 minute journey (walk and bus)

Distance from city centre: 25 minutes journey (walk and bus)

Cawdor, Mabfield, Furness, Landcross

It doesn’t get any more Fallowfield than this.

It’s not pretty, but it sure has charm.

You’ve come to Manchester to experience Madchester. No one pulls off grunge appeal quite like you can.

Distance from Sainsbury’s: 6 minute walk

Distance from uni: 20 minute journey (walk and bus)

Distance from city centre: 30 minute journey (walk and bus)

Victoria Road and Wellington Road

The perfect distance between Withington and Fallowfield, these roads are just a five minute walk from each.

The Victorian-style houses on Victorian Road are beautiful from the outside, have good sized gardens and are pretty spacious inside, making them great for second years wanting to live in big groups.

Distance from Sainsbury’s: 11 minute walk

Distance from uni: 23 minute journey (walk and bus)

Distance from city centre: 35 minute journey (walk and bus)

Withinton

Just a short walk from Fallowfield, Withinton is slightly quieter, a bit less student-rammed and a perfect destination for third years.

It’s got some great pubs and bars and a cheap Japanese restaurant.

Although it’s teeny bit further away than town and university than Fallowfield, the advantage is that you’re more likely to get a spot on the bus in the morning.

Distance from Sainsbury’s: 17 minute walk

Distance from uni: 20 minute journey (walk and bus)

Distance from city centre: 39 minute journey (walk and bus)
