Meet the big names shaking up clubbing in Nottingham

You’ll find them at Stealth, Ocean and Crisis

| UPDATED

From Stealth to Coco Tang, you’ll never be bored of the nightlife in Notts. Throw Prelinks into the mix, and you’ll be nailing your nights out for the rest of the year.

Prelinks only launched in Nottingham last year, yet it already lists every event you need or want to know about.

The app gives you a weekly breakdown of club nights, one off gigs and live artists in Notts, as well as the low-down on the type of music, the location and how many people are going.

This year Prelinks is even bigger and better, armed with an update allowing you to see and chat to your Facebook friends who are heading to the same events as you.

Just join an event on the app to see the profiles of other students going to the night. Then comes the fun part – swiping, matching and chatting, all before you’ve even got to the club.

We spoke to some of the biggest movers and shakers in Notts and asked them about their involvement with Prelinks, what the app does and how it’s transforming their nights in Nottingham.

Sophie Swift, third year, English

As a netball girl, Rock City has to be Sophie’s favourite night out. She said: “It hosts the best night: Crisis. It’s the Uni’s sport night and all the different clubs often go in fancy dress.”

Wild sports nights aside, lesser-known but trendy Tilt and the Hockley Arts Club have been Sophie’s top venues this year. She said: “They are two of the coolest places I’ve been to in Nottingham. They are both really chilled, there are lots of different people hanging out, and they both do amazing cocktails.”

When it comes to Prelinks, Sophie said: “I like that you can see how many and which people are going to different events. It’s also great that it’s tailored to you – it shows you nights for where you live and for what you’re interested in.”

“Prelinks is just so handy. It allows you to meet loads of new people, and it also helps to promote different nights that people may not have heard about before, making them bigger, better and more popular.”

Last year, Sophie organised a joint social with the men’s football club, which was sponsored by Prelinks. The third year said: “It was definitely the best social we had last year. Prelinks gave everyone a free shot and downloading the app got everyone chatting before the event, which definitely made me more excited when the night came.”

Josh Watkins, second year, Film and Television

Josh’s favourite night is Friday at Stealth. He said: “On top of their resident DJ, Friend Within, they usually invite some pretty awesome guests along, like Jackmaster, Artful Dodger and Patrick Topping. If you want a guaranteed memorable night out, Stealth is the place to be.

“However, the events you should really keep an eye out for are the one offs, like Detonate, Wigflex and Caramello. Almost all of your friends will definitely be going and they’re set to be huge.”

As well as using Prelinks to check out the best nights around, Josh said: “I can also see what my mates want to go to throughout the week. Rather than searching endlessly through Facebook, the app lets you know what’s happening every week in Nottingham, which puts an end to the constant question of, ‘Where shall we go tonight?’ Honestly, it makes the whole process of going out a lot easier.”

When he’s out speaking to students about the app, Josh gets that not everyone likes to be stopped by someone promoting. He said: “But with Prelinks, once the barrier is broken and you start to tell them what it’s about, people show a genuine interest. It’s not actually hard to get people to fall in love with Prelinks – the app does all of the talking itself.

“It is one of the biggest up and coming apps in the country regarding social nights out. I’ve been with Prelinks since it started in Nottingham late 2015, and it is crazy to see how far it has come.

“Being part of Prelinks is great fun. You’re constantly out socialising – you could be talking to people out on the streets or at a bar. Being part of the Prelinks team means you get looked after. Whether it’s a couple of pints after work or some tickets to an event, all of your work is noticed and appreciated. It’s like working with a bunch of mates.”

Winnie Ellis-Hall, graduate, Film and Television

“It is safe to say I went out a lot at uni. You would never catch me missing a Crisis Wednesday or a trip to the Big O. How could I resist a cheeky dip on a Friday listening to the ultimate cheesy bangers?”

As a recent graduate, Winnie knows a thing or two about Nottingham’s vibrant nightlife scene. She said: “There is absolutely something for everyone – from the mental one off DJ events at Stealth to taking your top off and swinging it in the air to the Baywatch theme tune, you’re never left with nothing to go to in Notts.”

Winnie said: “People most often meet at pres. There always seems to be a big session before you hit the club and they are normally filled with a massive bunch of different people. The smoking area is another good shout – nearly every club in Notts has an enormous one, so you’ll normally spend most of your night out there, meeting people looking to steal a cheeky cig!”

Winnie believes Prelinks is the obvious choice for meeting people. She said: “Whether it’s looking for someone you fancy, or just someone you want to meet (don’t deny it, we’ve all done it), Prelinks lets you see if they are attending the nights you’ll already be going to with your mates. Having the opportunity to match and start chatting beforehand makes the whole meeting people process even better.

“If you’re looking for your Bowery fix on a Thursday but your housemate’s still in her Oompa Loompa costume from last night, you can check which of your Facebook friends are going on Prelinks, drop them a quick message and sort your crew for the night.”

Prelinks is useful for making sure you don’t miss out on a night which is likely to sell out. Winnie said: “Because most events in Notts require ticket buying in advance, a lot of nights are missed out on because you don’t find out about them until a few days before. With Prelinks, the events pop up well over a week before – so there is absolutely no excuse not to nab your ticket early doors.”

Yasemin Kansarn, second year, Photography

“Who you’re with can definitely make or break a night. If you’re in a large group, or if someone you know brings new people along with them, it makes things much more interesting. Glitter also tends to go down a treat on a Trent night out.”

The second year photographer believes that Ocean is the best club in Notts. She said: “The music range is unbelievable. I don’t think any other club could get away with playing the Frozen soundtrack quite like they do.”

On nights not to miss, Yas said: “Detonate is definitely the one to watch out for. People travel from different cities to come to their events. Detonate Halloween is going to be massive.”

Yas thinks Prelinks is a great way for Trent and their varsity rival to connect. She said: “It can be difficult to get to know people from the University of Nottingham, as their standard nights out differ from ours. Prelinks instantly opens the door between both universities.”

Yas added: “Prelinks makes a night out better as it makes it easy to meet up with new people. Once you’ve matched with someone it makes it way easier to get chatting to them.”
