Bournemouth University SU officers ‘appalled’ by far-right riots in new statement

‘As your students’ union, we acknowledge the critical role we must play in putting a stop to the rising hate’

Bournemouth University Students’ Union officers issued a statement following the far-right riots unfolding across the country.

In the statement, they “condemn” the violence and offer sympathy to those affected.

An anti-immigration protest is planned to take place on Sunday 18th August 2024, in Bournemouth Town Centre, motivated by the right-wing riots that have taken place across the United Kingdom.

Despite the rise in anti-racist protestors reducing the violent attacks country-wide, students are still cautioned to steer clear of the town centre while the supposed riots are taking place.

The statement issued by SUBU expressed how students have the right to feel safe in their communities, and with the upcoming protests, students must be vigilant and take the necessary precautions to keep themselves safe.

The statement read: “We are appalled by and condemn the recent riots across the UK, and we want to express our sympathy and solidarity to all those affected

“We are aware that a protest motivated by the same hate has been planned in Bournemouth on Sunday, August 18th.

“You have the right to be and feel safe in your local community whilst carrying out your daily activities, but we urge our students and staff to stay vigilant and take relevant precautions.

“As your students’ union, we acknowledge the critical role we must play in putting a stop to the rising hate. We are committed to actively working towards creating a safer and more inclusive environment for everyone.

“For those who have been affected by the violence taking place, our SUBU Advice team are here to listen and support you. They can also signpost you to other services available. Reach out to them or book an appointment with an advisor at subu.org.uk/advice.

“You can report a hate crime to the police by calling 101. Always remember to call 999 if it is an emergency.”
