BREAKING: Birmingham has confirmed its first case of Coronavirus

Birmingham City Council have warned more cases are expected

Birmingham City Council have today confirmed the city’s first case of Coronavirus, as the UK’s number of confirmed cases reaches 90.

The patient tested positive yesterday and is in hospital with respiratory symptoms that are not deemed serious. The patient caught the virus whilst at a conference, and they were in contact with a known case. Two others who live in the same household are now in self-isolation.

Speaking to BirminghamLive, Director of Public Health Justin Varney said “one person of working age” is in hospital in Birmingham after being diagnosed with coronavirus. No age or gender was given.

16,659 people have now been tested for Coronavirus in the UK, with 90 coming back positive.

England’s chief medical officer, Professor Chris Whitty, told BirminghamLive it was now “highly likely” the virus is spreading inside the UK among people who haven’t travelled.
