Nipple cake causes crisis

Instagram have really taken the cake on this one…

Instagram recently deactivated an account for posting a picture of a cake that looked too much like a nipple, which broke their community guidelines. This story gained traction when Fiona Moseley took to twitter to express how ridiculous this censorship was. Here is the cake in question:

Are you turned on by this cake?

In order for a picture or account to be suspended, enough people have to report said picture or account. My first question concerns the people who actually reported this picture. Were people really offended by this supposedly topless treat? The second question that comes to mind is how the other 100,000 pictures of half-naked women advertising products don’t get reported. Perhaps Instagram turns a blind eye to big business attracting more traffic on their app.

What annoys me about this story is the clear double standard Instagram has. Half naked picture of a girl promoting a protein shaker? *THUMBS UP* However an innocent picture of an Easter cake uploaded by a small business breaches the community guidelines. Is this cake really sexually suggestive? I mean – come on.

I understand that Instagram doesn’t want its social media platform turning into porn, but realistically, it already has. How many accounts can you see on your popular feed promoting items using scantily clad women? It seems that Instagram doesn’t mind when it works in their favour, promoting their platform. The bottom line is that SEX SELLS. This isn’t exactly new. Think of how Miley Cyrus resurrected her career after Hannah Montana.

Really though, why does Instagram think it’s okay for Kim K to post a fully nude picture censoring her nipples and privates but deactivate an account because this cake… this cake is unacceptable for the community.

Advertisements work best when they grab attention. This is where the premise of sex sells comes from, but perhaps it’s time to confront this contradictory outlook on nipples. There’s no point crying over spilt milk – all has been restored; Instagram re-activated the account and issued an apology. This cake catastrophe has just highlighted the stupid fine line we as a community take on what is deemed obscene.

As a society today we’re all for expressing our sexuality, which is great and can be really empowering. The question here is: why do sex and nudity make the cut, when an apparently erotic looking cake isn’t seen as appropriate? Why do we still get offended by sexuality in a world where everyone’s showing off their skin? Who knows, but it’s a frustrating inconsistency.
