Students have accused the Guild of hypocrisy after a promo video emerged showing  a sabb officer wearing a sombrero.

Guild apparatchiks had come under fire after banning the Mexican hat – along with other “culturally insensitive” outfits – from their events, because they claim it is racist.

Now the busybodies have been left red-faced after students discovered the clip, which shows VP Housing Dave Charles wearing a sombrero.

The video was posted by the Guild earlier in September, but it has caused stir in light of recent events. On Halloween, revellers wearing sombreros, Native American headdresses and a costume based on Sacha Baron Cohen’s film The Dictator, were denied entry or asked to remove their costume.

The disappointed party-goers protested, with one claiming sabbs were “ruining our university with your stupid games”.

Sacha Baron Cohen’s General Aladeen was among the banned costumes

But VP sport Vicki Harris told them Mexican costumes were unacceptable. She said: “Dressing up as Mexicans would not be okay since it could be seen as imitation of a culture and relate to a stereotype about the race of that particular ethnicity group, even if the intention is by no means harmful at all!”

Students were quick to defend VP Dave Charles, who is widely seen as an innocent victim of policy formed on the hoof:

The Tab approached Dave Charles for comment but did not receive a response.
