Arrests in the Holylands: Riot police and dogs were deployed

One policeman was injured early this morning

St Patrick’s Day is off to a disruptive start after arrests were made early this morning.

The PSNI were called to Agincourt Avenue after a crowd of 300 people poured to the streets early this morning.

As the celebrations got out of hand, police were called to the Holylands area at around 2am to break up the crowds gathering on the street, reported to be throwing bottles at cars and homes.

After over two hours of struggle, one police officer was injured after being struck with a bottle and three arrests were made.

The three men arrested on suspicion of a number of offences are aged 19, 20 and 21 and remain in police custody.

Holylands resident, Conor Tinnelly said: “I saw it, it was wild. Line of riot police, had the dogs out and all. Riot vans drove up the road and then the riot squad came up shields raised dogs by their side. Madness.”

PSNI Superintendent Darrin Jones said: “Police will continue to have a visible presence in the area over the coming days. I would strongly encourage people to consider the long- term consequences of engaging in any anti-social or criminal behaviour. This could lead to you receiving a fine and a criminal record.

“Police will be on the streets of Belfast over the forthcoming busy bank holiday, to ensure anyone wishing to travel, work or socialise in Belfast can do so safely.”
