Student protest campaign disrupts QUB meeting

They occupied the Lanyon quad

At around 2pm today the Fossil Free QUB campaign launched a protest against the university’s planning and finance committee.

Occupying the steps in the Lanyon quad, the group were there to prevent a meeting regarding QUB’s future investment in fossil fuel.

Security arrived in an attempt to control the situation, with attendees of the meeting forced to walk around the protesters.

Campaigns and Communications student officer and organiser of the protest, Sean Fearon said: “Queen’s has invested five and a half million pounds into fossil fuel companies.

“We have been trying to engage for months but they have made no promises to start to divest.

“Other universities have pledged to divest by 2020, what we want is a five year timetable.

“We’re here to stop this meeting of the planning and finance committee for Queen’s, it’s the step above the Vice Chancellor committee.”
