Should same-sex marriage be legalised in Northern Ireland?

Love is in the Eire

Monday saw gay marriage’s fifth defeat in Stormont as the DUP’s “petition of concern” vetoed the vote to change the law.

As a result Northern Ireland remains the only country in the UK and Ireland yet to change marriage laws.

We went out to hear your thoughts on whether same-sex marriage should be legal in Northern Ireland.

James, first year, Food Quality, Safety and Management

“Everyone has the right to their own opinion and belief but ultimately we should have gay marriage.

“The South can do it so why should we be the sore thumb hanging on to the past?”

Lisa, MA Arts Management

“I think it should be legalised. I’m from Germany and interestingly I think Germany was one of the first to legalise civil partnership.

“It’s almost embarrassing coming from somewhere open minded to somewhere where it is such a big issue.”

Paul, University Christian Outreach

“I think there’s a better way, allowing gay marriage fails to solve a bigger question.

“I think it’s just worth asking why gay people think they need to get married, what is it that they’re actually trying to satisfy.”

Matthew, third year, Film Studies

“I’m all for it”

Chen and Jacob, second years, Law and Politics

“You’re asking two gay people so the answer is yes.”

Cliodhna, first year, Law

“Yeah I think it should be legalised. I would respect other people’s opinion but I wouldn’t be against it.”
