‘My boyfriend surprised me with 1D tickets and they cancelled the show’

One Direction were due to start their three night run at Belfast’s SSE Arena when Liam’s hangover kicked in (maybe), and the Tuesday night concert was cancelled.

Concertgoers were told five minutes before they were due on stage with the promise of a rescheduled show today.

We spoke to Kerri Graham, a final year Early Childhood Studies at Stranmillis University College who was surprised with tickets from her boyfriend Tuesday evening.

When did you get your tickets for the gig?

I got them at 6:30pm – my boyfriend got them about four weeks ago as a surprise so I didn’t know I was going.

I thought I was going for dinner.

Wow, you must have been really excited. How was the atmosphere before it was cancelled?

Yes I really was because I didn’t get tickets as I’ve seen them every time.

It was amazing, Jamie Lawson got the crowd really hyped up.

When they found out everyone was definitely in shock – no one could really believe it until we started to leave. It was devastating for everyone.

Were there many tears?

Floods of tears, people of all ages.

I can imagine. What were the scenes like?

I think everyone was in a state of disbelief. I waited until the arena had filed out a good bit although so I didn’t see much outside of the arena.

However, there were a lot of furious people, especially parents wanting answers which is understandable of course.

Especially as they were due on stage any minute. Were you annoyed by how late they left it?

Most certainly – it was ridiculous. Apparently they knew the show was unlikely to go ahead on Monday and that Liam was in the hospital at 5pm [on Tuesday].

Everybody would have been slightly less annoyed if they knew before doors opened because people spent so much money and time, especially those who’d travelled far.

Young people were left stranded waiting on parents as well.

Must be especially annoying for those who can’t make the rescheduled show on Friday. Are you able to go?

Exactly. Yes I can but me and my boyfriend are hoping that he can get Friday night off work.
