All grown up: The Eg is back
Culchie hearts will be broken
Over the Christmas break The Eg quietly closed its doors, shrouding itself in mystery and invoking the curiosity of residents and regulars.
On Friday night it reopened, and my god some culchie hearts are going to be broken.
Dark and sophisticated, The Eglantine Bar is totally different from its casual culchie predecessor.
Gone is the Buckfast Bar and picnic benches. In their place are Jagermeister bottles dripping black candle wax and cocktails with fresh raspberries, sloe gin and egg white.
A slightly inebriated Claire McKenna, self-confessed alcohol expert and bar connoisseur, has described the new look as: “Old man chic, it’s one for the bearded gentleman.”
The Eglantine boasts a brand new menu, and apparently the cheese and bacon fries are a must try- not the healthiest dinner, but who cares when you’re eating chips cooked in beef fat?
The staff have also been given a bit of a make-over, suitably hipster looking in accessories like caps and red braces.
But they’ve kept that friendly helpfulness that makes Eg so darn loveable.
“It’s cool, but not pretentious, and that’s why it’s so nice” gushed Claire over her second Clover Club cocktail and she’s right.
It may look fancy and ooze sophistication, but at heart it’s still the Eg- just a much, much better version.
