The regatta has been affiliated to the Commonwealth Games since 1986 but never directly included in the televised events schedule. The event is organised by the home nation in tandem with the Commonwealth Rowing Association every 4 years.

Queens University Belfast has dominated the selection with 5 of the 9 Team NI rowers being students at QUB and members of QUBBC or QUBLBC. Mick Desmond, QUBBC head coach, will also join his rowers at  Team NI as part of their coaching team.

Rebecca Edwards, one of the lucky chosen Queen’s students says,  ‘We’re excited but nervous. We went paddling this morning and saw the Canadian, English and Jamaicans squads so it’s pretty surreal.’

QUBBC and QUBLBC have been at the forefront of novice rowing, with the novice womens 8+ winning the Irish Championships in Cork in June.

Rebecca Mackey and Rebecca Edwards both started as novices within the club only 2 years ago in September 2012 and claim,

‘We are most looking forward to seeing how we compare to other crews who we have never raced before and of course swapping kit! ! We hope we do Queens Ladies proud.’
