QUB student council proposes ban on Remembrance Day Poppies

A motion proposing a ban on the sale of poppies within the Students’ Union at Queen’s will come before the university’s student council later today.

The agenda for tonight’s meeting includes a motion, proposed by Seán Fearon and seconded by Kellyann McAteer, which says that for the SU to remain an “inclusive and neutral space for all students at Queen’s University”, poppies must no longer be sold from the SU.

The motion also advocates an end to QUBSU’s political sponsorship of the Poppy Appeal “in the name of peace, inclusivity and progressivism”.

It goes on to say that the Poppy Appeal is “politically charged and necessarily divisive”, and that the removal of poppies from sale in the union will avoid “offence and a sense of exclusion”

The annual poppy appeal is organised by the Royal British Legion, a charity which raises funds for armed forces and their families.

The council, which meets this evening at 6pm in the Space area of SU, invites any student to come along.
