Cats Vs Dogs – Queen’s students have their say

Cats and dogs: mortal enemies and beloved pets of many QUB students. But which is better..?

| UPDATED cats dogs pets poll

It’s an age-old conflict that has been depicted in countless books, films and TV shows. Not to mention the endless amount of memes and pictures floating around the internet of their constant battle for dominance. But what do the students of Queen’s have to say? We took to the streets (er, campus) to find out. Let the battle commence.

Dogs have always championed the household pet popularity contest – they’re loyal, their love for their human knows no bounds and of course, they love a good cuddle. Not to mention the hours of fun they provide when you can make them do stuff like this:

Business student dog’s been having a ruff day

They also proved the most popular choice of furry friend in our findings. A second year language student, prefers dogs. She confided in us on this delicate matter.

However, as a student living solely for that bit of reassurance that the next loan instalment will be in soon, dogs might not be the ideal pet to have around. They cost money. Money is sacred. They also require exercise. Exercise is not so sacred when it’s raining outside, you’ve got a gargantuan hangover and you’re half-way through a Come Dine With Me marathon on Channel 4. It’s vitally important that you know how the super annoying guy from Stoke-upon-Trent got on with his dessert, y’see.

Come Dog With Me? …Sounds wrong.

Despite all the canine love, it seems a little unfair to assume that all cats are claw-wielding fur balls of pure evil (albeit hard to disprove when your lovingly-decorated Christmas tree has been torn to shreds from head to toe by Mittens), so it’s about time they got some good press.

Cats: They just love wrecking shit.

Cats are hilarious. They can get themselves into spaces previously thought impossible to reach, their air of self-importance makes it ten times funnier when their plans to do weird stuff go wrong and their over-reactions to everyday noises and objects make for some quality comedic moments. As far as student house pets go, they require less money than dogs and virtually no cleaning. They may even accompany you for a few quiet ones:

Kitty swall – much cuter than a regular swall

Not to mention they’re pretty cute – which is exactly what Diarmuid, a 20 year old physics student, told us. He prefers cats, while fellow physics student Stephanie provided a much-needed balanced view in this heated debate: “They’re both awesome in different ways. I can’t pick.”

Diarmuid is excited about cats.

So, after a long and arduous deliberation over who wins the QUB cat/dog popularity contest, we simply could not decide. No matter which one you prefer, there’s nothing quite like coming home to something warm and furry at the end of a shitty day.
