Rowling at QUB? LOL, JK.

Did you fall for J.K Rowling’s Polyjuice Potion Impersonation at QUB’s Clements Coffee Shop in the SU too?

So, while I was quite happy to be at home avoiding all the Orwellian ‘Big Brother  is watching you’ posts and photos appearing on the Spotted at QUB Facebook page, that all changed on January 25th  when my Twitter and Facebook page started going crazy. Turns out none other than JK Rowling visited us at QUB last weekend!

Not only was she here, but she was apparently giving a lecture on Myths and Mythology, at Queen’s. Yes, of all the universities across the UK, across the entire world, J.K Rowling decided on Queen’s University Belfast? Hmm…

one of the many suspicious fans on Twitter

Suspicious? I thought the same. And  something else seemed off. This world renowned children’s author had also decided against hiding out in her hotel room until delivering her lecture on Myths and Mythology at Queen’s. Instead, she went and had a coffee in Clements Coffee Shop at the SU, where fans asked for photos, signatures and 1st edition Harry Potter books to be signed by the author.

Let’s hope she didn’t get it signed by a fake!

I didn’t quite believe it. And believe me, as an English student and massive Harry Potter fan, I really really wanted to …Until I saw the (not-that-convincing) photos, and the hundreds of other people liking and commenting on how jealous they were that they missed out on meeting her as well!

having a ‘fangirl’ moment

However, one day later, the lucky fans and their popular Facebook photos and posts about meeting the author got a very puplic and cringe-worthy shock – it was an imposter!

Instead of meeting and chatting with the J.K Rowling, they instead met a drama teacher, who looked a liiitle bit like her and was conducting a social experiment.

While this was very traumatic for the embarrassed fans, as well as the fangirls hysterically crying their eyes out home, complaining about J.K’s lack of  tweet’s about her upcoming trip to Belfast, for every other jealous fan out there, this scam was pretty funny, and also makes you think about how easily you can be persuaded that this woman…

J.K Rowling PolyJuice Potion!

…looks anything like this one!

…the REAL J.K Rowling!
