Shocking figures released by Justice Minister David Ford at the end of last year a staggering 25% of all Northern Ireland’s sex offenders are living in East and South Belfast, on the doorstep of QUB.

Justice Minister Ford further revealed that there are a mammoth 1,080 convicted perverts being monitored across Northern Ireland, a number he admitted he found “remarkable”.

Of these, 254 sex offenders currently live in PSNI B District, comprising of East Belfast and the university heartland of South Belfast.

It is believed the ease of access to low-budget rented accommodation is one reason for the high number of offenders in the student area, making the district home to the highest number of sex offenders.

Mr Ford admitted he understands the high number is worrying to residents of the popular student area.  “It always makes people uneasy to learn that such a quantity is native to their area.”

The shockingly high statistics show east and south Belfast have easily the highest number of sex offenders, compared to just 102 in north and west Belfast.

Many students are unaware of the presence of such high numbers of sex offenders in the University area. Second year French and history student at QUB, Lauren McGreevy, was shocked by the figures; “That’s horrible, it’s really disturbing and makes me feel unsafe”.

When contacted repeatedly by The Tab to discuss these figures, the university were unavailable for comment.
