The Elms to become a Tesco Express

Student bar The Elms has become the latest bar to pull its last pint and shut – but will be reopening as a Tesco’s. Yawn.

Student pub The Elms, previously known as The Globe, has officially been

bought over by Tesco and plans for a new chain store to take the pub’s place

are underway.

Bye-bye Elms…Hello Tesco!

Sold at £1.5 million, The Elms is the latest in a growing list of Belfast city centre pubs and clubs to close. Others include Auntie Annies, a staple of the Dublin Road for the past 15 years which closed in April this year. Also shutting its doors this month is the arguably less iconic and more embarrassing Beach Club.

Sad for sale signs mark what once was Auntie Annies

Although it is sad that these landmark pubs are disappearing the news of The Elms
brings about a sense of nostalgia. Memories of drunken nights out arise, arguments
with bouncers, bar men, stealing pint glasses along with piranha jugs
(which made a great vase) vomiting outside, oh all the vomit…
Do we really need another Tesco taking over a building containing those kind of
memories? If our pubs keep getting bought over by chain stores like Tesco where
will we drink? Where will we fall? Where will we lose our dignity?
Fuck off Tesco I want a pint.
