Protests in Aberystwyth as Post Office looks to close

Imagine the pain of walking to the other Post Office by CK

Protestors marched through the streets of Aberystwyth Saturday morning against the controversial Post Office closure, meeting at 10:45 in Trefechan car park before moving into the town centre.

If the closures go ahead, it means there won’t be a Crown Post Office for 140 miles, and that seven people will lose their jobs. The Post Office is one of 39 throughout the UK being considered for closure as part of an “ongoing review”, and it seems likely that the Post Office will enter into a franchise arrangement, in which the services of the Post Office are transferred to a 3rd party in town.

2nd Year German and Spanish Student James Ruff told The Tab: “As somebody who is from a city in which the main post office in the city centre was closed down and moved into the branch of WHSmith, and the independent post office on my estate moved into a newsagents; I have seen first-hand how quickly the service provided can go downhill to the detriment to the communities they serve, despite the best efforts of the hardworking and under-appreciated staff.”

“If the Post Office in Aberystwyth is to close and is moved into another shop, the service will be affected with long queues and people will get annoyed, and what’s more, a beautiful building that still serves its original purpose after so many years will be closed and lie empty.”

It has not yet been decided where the Post office will be moved to.
