Do you want to leave the European Union?

It truly is a controversial topic

Ceredigion is the most EU friendly part of the country according to a recent YouGov poll of over 80,000 Britons. Both sides of the campaign are kicking off at the moment, with activists for Leave and Remain a common sight on the Aberystwyth high street, and a string of debates being organised.

The Tab Aberystwyth gets out on the street to ask people what they think of the ongoing debate.

Michael Robbins, Biology, foundation year

“If we leave the European Union, we’re stupid.”

Edward Ashdown, International Politics, first year

“Personally, it comes down to democracy. Do we want to be self-governing where we can elect our leaders and select our policies? Everything else falls to the wayside. But we’re better off out anyway.”

Kayla Francis, English Lit and Creative Writing, first year

“I’m travelling to Austria in the summer, and getting everything sorted was a nightmare let alone getting a visa on top.” We take that as a: Yes, let’s stay in the EU.

Christopher, joint honours English and Drama, first year

“We get more out of it than we put into it, not just trade but EU money funds Wales. I don’t think Westminister would replace it.”

Debi Bryant, English Literature, first year

“TTIP is a big concern for me, as it’ll mean our NHS will get privatised. Privatisation done under the Tories can be reversed, but privatisation done with TTIP will be permeneant.”

Rob Talkington, English and Creative writing, first year

“The EU gives us a lot of things, such as free travel and right to work. It’s a fallback for when we fuck up. We’d be stupid to walk away.”

Fraser House, Agriculture with Business Studies, first year

“It destroys our fisheries, over regulates our business, the Common Agricultural Policy is a load of wank and the EU means we can’t control our borders.”
