Streets cordoned off after Storm Jake brings down roof tiles

There’s winds of up to 70mph

As if Aberystwyth hasn’t been battered enough by storms over the last few weeks, Storm Jake is bringing wings of up to 70mph and rain, causing wide spread chaos across town and campus.

The quick succession of storms in recent months is starting to have a knock on effect with the town.

The Met Office has issued yellow warnings of wind, snow, and icy stretches on untreated pavements and roads. It is unlikely Aberystwyth will see significant snow, but those travelling further inland should be wary of icy patches on the roads.

The storm has caused roof tiles to come dislodged and crash to the pavement, causing road closures throughout Aberystwyth town centre. Road closures include Aberystwyth Sea Front, Pier Street and Terrace Road and Bath Street, and all services have been re-routed.

The University has emailed all students saying: “We would like to remind you of the need to take great care when outside. Keep well clear of the sea and be mindful of the risks of walking near trees, due to the risk of falling branches. A number trees and branches have already fallen on the Penglais campus.”
