Police will now patrol Union Terrace Gardens until 5am every night

This follows the two sex attacks which have taken place this year

Police will now patrol Union Terrace Gardens until 5am and CCTV is going to be installed.

This comes after two women were raped in the gardens over the span of two months, and growing public concern for the safety of the area.

These decisions were made at a City Centre Community Council meeting.

Jenny Laing, leader of the Council, said: “We need some balance, but hopefully these measures will allay some fears.

“People need to think about how they’re getting home if they’re out and about at night. Everybody has a personal responsibility, people can’t become complacent.”

Council members are also looking into further methods to make the area safer.

Discussions about moving taxi ranks from further down Union Street have taken place, as this would mean more marshals closer to the gardens, as well as thinning the bushes in the garden.

CCTV has now been installed, but has not been turned on and is referred to as a temporary measure.

A police spokeswoman said: “Patrols have started and are ongoing and they are part of our weekend planning.”
