Ambulance and firefighters called to Meston blaze

Blame the Chemistry dept

UPDATE: Your classes are back on.

A fire broke out in the Meston building on campus earlier this morning.

Firefighters and an ambulance were called to the scene at around 10am.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said three of their units have been sent to Meston, with a total six firefighters currently on campus tackling the blaze.

Watch out for hunky firemen on campus.

Whilst we can see no flames, one student commented that the place smelled “charcoal-y”.

Students with classes and labs in Meston today were emailed promptly about the situation, being told all of their classes would be cancelled today. Ideal if you’re going to the St Andrews ball.

Meston Walk has been corned off.

Whilst there has been no reported casualties, the building is still up in smoke, and there has been no confirmation of how the issue started (we’re looking at you though, chemistry department).

A spokesperson for the university said:

“The minor fire that broke out in the Meston building at around 9.30am this morning has been dealt with and the building was re-opened by 11am.

“Lectures and tutorials in the building will take place as usual today. Chemistry students have been advised if their teaching arrangements for the day have been affected.”

More to follow.
