RGU union closing down

The last union in Aberdeen is set to close on July 20th.

Bad news guys – RGU Union will be opening its doors for the last time on July 20th.

The Union, which was set to close last July but saved following a student-led campaign, has now been bought over by new owners.

Aberdeen will now be the only large university city without a union for students. This would be a blow to any student community, but considering the extortionate rate of nights out in Aberdeen, it’s a terrible sign for our already struggling wallets.

Paul Greene, student President for communication and democracy at RGU, said, “This has been an ongoing situation for a while now and I will be having discussions with students regarding the closure.

“I want to know exactly what students would like done after the closure – many of them are concerned about it.”

RGU Union will soon be no more.

Concerns also ought to arise for The Bobbin and Paramount – considered the last two student watering holes in the city, will they cope with the influx of thirsty students now RGU’s three floors of glory is closing down?

RGU has suggested setting up a common room in one of the accommodation blocks for 2017, but students say this “does not suffice”.

The pressure is now on Aberdeen University to demolish Butchart and get that bar installed as soon as possible, but many students currently enrolled in university will spend their next two years begging for cheap jägerbombs on Belmont Street.
