PLT Gemma stole ideas

PrettyLittleThing claps back at a designer claiming Gemma Owen range stole her ideas

‘These two products look the same and it’s really disappointing and disheartening for me to see’

A fashion designer on TikTok has claimed PrettyLittleThing stole one of her shirt design ideas for Gemma Owen’s latest collection with the brand. The design is a cut-out shirt which the designer claimed she originally made back in November 2021, however PrettyLittleThing “strongly denies” the claims of any design being stolen.

In the TikTok, Chrissie said: “Gemma Owen’s PrettyLittleThing edit just came out and it showed up on my FYP and I saw this top and I thought ‘hold on, I’ve seen this before’.” In the TikTok, Chrissie showed a picture of her in a top similar to Gemma’s on PLT that she had designed back in November 2021.

When Chrissie posted a side-by-side comparison of her shirt design and Gemma’s from her PLT edit on Instagram, the video showed that Gemma had viewed the story. “I don’t know how much involvement Gemma had herself in designing this piece,” she continued to say in the TikTok. Chrissie explained she understands brands take inspiration from others for designs however seeing the shirt in Gemma Owen’s collect was “really disappointing and disheartening” due to the similarity in the designs.

When The Tab approached PrettyLittleThing for comment, a spokesperson said: “We strongly deny claims this style has been copied from this designer. This cut out shirt design is a generic design seen on various celebrities and catwalks as you can see from the moodboard produced when designing this product over five months ago.”

The moodboard PLT created had various designs similar to the one in Gemma’s edit and the designer’s, including one picture of Bella Hadid in a similar shirt.
