Netflix’s latest true crime is about the horrific anthrax attacks after 9/11

The Anthrax Attacks will be out on 8th September

We’re creeping our way to the 21st anniversary of 9/11 – a world-shattering terrorist attack not many of us were old enough to remember. Netflix (in a rare collab with the BBC) will be dropping its latest true crime, The Anthrax Attacks, to mark this on Thursday (8th September).

It seems like everyone knows the story of the plane attacks on 9/11 – although it’s far too horrifying to imagine. On the 11th September 2001, two hijacked planes crashed into the World Trade Centre, while another crashed into The Pentagon. Around 3,000 people were killed in the devastation.

But you might not know about the anthrax attacks, which were carried out exactly one week after the plane crashes. The Anthrax Attacks will detail exactly what happened across those terrifying few weeks, and the FBI’s investigation into who was responsible.

What happened during the anthrax attacks in 2001?

Seven days after 9/11, a series of letters containing anthrax, a deadly virus, were sent out to news offices and two politicians. Anthrax can cause fatal shock, meningitis and breathing problems, among other things. Five people were killed, and at least 17 people were severely injured by the attacks.

The FBI got to work, trying to find out who could carry out an attack on this scale. Political pressure forced them to blame extremist group Al Qaeda after it was widely speculated they were responsible for 9/11 – although Osama Bin Laden never confirmed this.

As a result of the attacks, the number of people sending out physical mail decreased dramatically. This led to email becoming HUGELY popular for the first time, and a cultural shift was created.
