He wasn’t given a jail sentence over the death of his father

| UPDATED

Netflix has just released a new true crime documentary series, titled I Just Killed My Dad, which tells the story of Anthony Templet and where he is now.

Netflix describes I Just Killed My Dad as an “unprecedented documentary series”, which tells the unbelievable, never-been-told-before true story of the Templet family. Anthony Templet shot his father and never denied it. But why he did it is a complex question with profound implications that go far beyond one family. This three-episode documentary series explores the psyche of Anthony leading up to the events of June 3, 2019 and the journey of his mental and emotional aftermath.

Here’s everything we know about Anthony Templet, and where he is now.

Who is Anthony Templet?

Anthony Templet is from Louisiana and aged 17 he killed his father, Burt Templet, in their home. He had shot his father multiple times, but it was said he acted in self defence following years of abuse.

According to Fox8, Anthony shot his father Burt after they had argued over Anthony speaking to Burt’s ex-wife Susan. Burt had been trying to look through Anthony’s phone, to see if the two were speaking. After the shooting, Anthony never denied what he did. He phoned emergency services and said: “He tried to attack me. Then, we got into a fist fight. Then, I ran in his room, closed the door and got a gun. As I unlocked the door, he tried to [inaudible] and then I shot him.”

Anthony’s family said Burt had kept him from the rest of the family, taking him from their home when Anthony was five. They said he had been “abused by this evil man” and they only found out he was still alive when he was arrested over the death.

Anthony was originally arrested for manslaughter, but later had his charge changed to second-degree murder. When the charge was upped, his case was then also upped from juvenile court to adult court, meaning Anthony was facing a life sentence.

Where is Anthony Templet now?

In March 2021, Anthony Templet was convicted of negligent homicide over the death of his father. There was a lot to consider when the judge was sentencing Anthony Templet. He had intent to kill, used two guns, and continued to shoot his father even when he was on the floor. However, the judge also considered the continued abuse Anthony had suffered, and how his IQ had lowered as a result of this. Anthony’s defence and psychiatrists also argued strongly that he was not a threat to society, so should be given a lenient sentence.

The district’s attorney gave into this pressure, and agreed Anthony had been through a lot and should be treated fairly, meaning he shouldn’t face a trial. In 2021, aged 19, Anthony took a plea deal where he pleaded no contest to negligent homicide for the death of his father.

He wasn’t given any prison time, and instead has to attend therapy sessions and attend a high-school level diploma. Right now, Anthony Templet is on a probation period that will last until 2026, five years after he was sentenced. Prosecutor Dana Cummings said during the judgment: “What would time in jail do for this young man who has never actually had a chance to learn or to have friends or to be in the world?”

He is now 20, and the most recent thing Anthony Templet has been up to is appearing in the Netflix documentary I Just Killed My Father. In the documentary, it becomes clear Anthony is now working on rebuilding relationships with his mother and grandmother. “This is harder than losing him,” his mother says. “I want to be his friend, because I know it’ll never be a mother/son relationship. That was the past.”
