This is where you recognise the cast of The Dropout from

The latest show in a series of fraud focused programmes is The Dropout which aired on Hulu last night starring an incredible cast of Amanda Seyfried, Naveen Andrews and Laurie Metclaf.

The Dropout is an eight part series airing on Hulu and Disney+. It is a dramatised version of the real life story of Elizabeth Holmes and her company Theranos. Theranos was meant to be a groundbreaking medical service that allowed users to complete blood tests quicker and cheaper. However after raising billions of dollars in investment it was revealed the product didn’t actually work and Holmes was investigated for defrauding the public and charged with multiple counts of wire fraud.

The TV series is based on an ABC News Podcast of the same name and the first three episodes dropped last night with the following five to follow in the next few weeks.

The cast for The Dropout is full of household names and this is where you recognise them from:

Elizabeth Holmes – Amanda Seyfried

Amanda Seyfried takes on the lead role of Elizabeth Holmes the disgraced founder of Theranos. The role was originally meant to be played by Kate McKinnon, however the actress left the show to work on the fictionalised version of Tiger King called “Joe vs Carole”.

Everyone has probably seen Amanda in something before The Dropout. She is most well known for her roles in the Mamma Mia films, Les Miserables, Mean Girls, Dear John, Mank and many, many more.

Sunny Balwani – Naveen Andrews

Sunny Balwani was the president and COO of Theranos, as well as Elizabeth’s boyfriend and he’s been played by Naveen Andrews in The Dropout.

Naveen has been acting since the early 90s and is most well known for his roles as Kip in The English Patient, Sayid Jarrah in the series Lost and as Hasnat Khan in the movie Diana.

Tyler Schultz – Dylan Minnette

Tyler Schultz was one of the first ever employees of Theranos and became an early whistleblower of the fraud the company was committing.

In the series he is played by 25-year-old Dylan Minnette. Dylan has been acting since 2005 with one of his earliest roles being in Drake and Josh.

Since then he’s been in 13 Reasons Why, Scandal and Prisoners.

George Schultz – Sam Waterston

George Schultz is the grandfather of Tyler Shultz and was a board member of Theranos. One of the main reasons Tyler wanted to expose Theranos was to protect his grandfather.

In the series George is played by Sam Waterson who is most well known for his decades long career on Law & Order. He’s also known for playing Nick Carraway in the original Great Gatsby film and Sol on Netflix’s Grace and Frankie.

Dr. Phyllis Gardner – Laurie Metcalf

Dr Phyllis Gardner was a professor at Stanford, where Elizabeth was studying and she was one of the earliest people to doubt the science of Theranos.

She is played by Laurie Metclaf in the series. Laurie has been acting since the late 70s and has nearly 100 acting credits to her name.

Some of her most well known roles are as the mum of Ladybird and Sheldon Cooper’s mother in The Big Bang Theory. Laurie is also known for the series Roseanne and the movie Toy Story.

Richard Fuisz – William H. Macy

William H. Macy joins the cast of The Dropout as Richard Fuisz. Richard had known Elizabeth since she was a child as he was her family’s neighbour. He is a former CIA agent and doctor and Theranos sued him for taking their technology.

William has over 100 acting credits to his name and you’re most likely to recognise him from the movies Fargo and Magnolia and the series Shameless.

Rakesh Madhava – Utkarsh Ambudkar

Rakesh Madhava was an early employee at Theranos and is played in The Dropout by Utkarsh Ambudkar.

Utkarsh has been acting since 2007 and you’re most likely to recognise him from Pitch Perfect, Ghosts and The Mindy Project.

Ian Gibbons – Stephen Fry

Stephen Fry joins the cast of The Dropout as Ian Gibbons, who was the chief scientist at Theranos for a number of years.

It’s hard to find someone who doesn’t know who Stephen Fry is, but if you don’t then he’s most well known for his roles in Blackadder, V For Vendetta, Wilde, It’s A Sin and a notable cameo in St Trinian’s.

Rochelle Gibbons – Kate Burton

Rochelle Gibbons was the wife of Ian Gibbons and is played by Kate Burton in The Dropout.

Kate has already been in one fraud drama this year when she appeared in Inventing Anna on Netflix recently as Nora Radford.

She’s also well known for her roles in Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal and Law & Order.
