It’s time to admit it: Euphoria is just an hour-long glorified music video

Maybe Sam Levinson should stick to making playlists on Spotify

Unlike the first season of hit HBO show Euphoria, where each episode focused on one specific character’s life as narrated by Rue, the second season so far feels like a mish mash of viral meme-able moments and ten-second audio clips of admittedly good music. However, whilst the soundtrack of the debut season, helmed by Labrinth, felt cohesive and fit the clear plot without overpowering it or trying too hard, the new season is perplexing, leaving many on social media confused at the new direction.

If you asked me to describe the plot so far, I could only mention the gratuitous nudity and copious amounts of drugs. As one Twitter user put it, “we do not need four music videos in one episode.”

Sadly, I have to agree. Maybe the issue is that there is no one in the writer’s room telling Sam Levinson “no”. Is it really necessary to show Cassie topless in every episode? Probably not. Do we really need five-minute beautiful, beautiful shots of absolutely nothing? Absolutely not.

I do feel bad for whoever has to get permissions for the songs honestly, it seems like a nightmare to get them all approved. Maybe it is time to admit that Euphoria just is not hitting the same as it did when it first came out. Personally, I’m over the nothing plot that feels like it is going nowhere and characters I am confused about. (Does anyone remember the name of that girl who is randomly around Maddy but has no plot or background?)

Does this mean I will stop watching? Hell no. Even though the storylines feel painful at times I still need to figure out if the latest Rue conspiracy theory is true.

So what does this mean for the future of the show? Apart from more viral tweets every week and more meme formats, nothing will change unless someone directly tells Sam Levinson to maybe tone it down on the gorgeous, gorgeous shots with gorgeous, gorgeous songs and have some more plot.

Ultimately though I’m still gonna watch Euphoria every week, whether it is nothing but a glorified music video or not.
