The male celebrities who hate the shows and movies that made them famous

Still not over Zac Efron slamming High School Musical

It’s a tough life being a white male celebrity. They have millions in the bank, thousands of adoring fans and occasionally have to compromise their artistic integrity. Despite their luxuries and privileges many male celebrities find it difficult to admit they started on a teen drama and feel the need to shit on the very projects which made them famous. Whether its Robert Pattinson calling the Twilight Saga “weird” or Jacob Elordi saying he’d never seen The Kissing Booth there is no end to their shunning of the films and TV shows which made them household names.

Over the years a number of male actors have come out and said they hated the show or movie they were in, mainly because they’re now a “serious” actor and the “appalling” movie doesn’t fit their vibe of moody misunderstood film star. Most of the time they’re from teen movies targeted to young girls where the actors are centre of attention and blasted a “heart throb”. Sure I can understand it’s annoying to only be known for one role your entire life. No one wants to be known as the person they were when they were 19 forever. However it’s their blatant disregard for films and TV shows that mean so much to people which can really sting.

We’ve all had those “embarrassing” first jobs that you will push to the back of your mind and remove entirely from your CV. However when your weird first job is a smash hit on Netflix, you’d think you wouldn’t bash it completely.

These are the male celebs who have openly admitted to hating the films and TV shows they were part of:

Robert Pattinson

No one hates their own movie series more than Robert Pattinson. He’d been in a few things before starring as Edward Cullen in Twilight but nothing made him more famous than the sparkling vampire series.

But ever since the series finished he has had no problem showing his distaste for the franchise. He ran out of the movie premiere, said Stephenie Meyer’s original book should never have been published and called the whole series “weird”.

In an interview with W Magazine in 2017 he said: “If it hadn’t been so successful, I think people would have thought it was really weird. It’s a really weird story. But I think once it becomes mainstream, it’s difficult for people to see how strange the story is.

“It’s nuts. I had to give her a cesarean by chewing through a placenta. I don’t know the medical—how it works. But there was definitely chewing through something. No, it’s wild.” Tbf he does have a point.

Jacob Elordi

You may know him as Nate in Euphoria but Jacob Elordi has his role of Noah in Netflix’s The Kissing Booth to thank for his break into fame. And yet he really seems to not want to thank it at all.

Over the years Jacob has given various hints he doesn’t like the movie trilogy. In an interview with Vanity Fair Jacob compared auditioning for the Kissing Booth to “murdering the thing” he loved and said it was his ticket to the US.

He said: “I’m a purist and love the movie theatre, so I had this weird moral battle of ‘What am I aiding and abetting? Am I the face of this robotic, terrifying new age? Am I murdering this thing that I love?’ But there was this mentality of, ‘I’ll do whatever the fuck I’ve got to do to get to the United States and do what I love.’ ”

Jacob has called his character Noah “awful” which in fairness he’s not wrong about. Recently he said he’s felt very “misunderstood” as an actor because of the previous movies he’s made and in another interview he’s said he’s never even seen The Kissing Booth 2. So yeah safe to say he’s not a fan.

Zac Efron

It’s been over 15 years since High School Musical first came out on Disney Channel and yet the movie is still referenced when we talk about Zac Efron. Why? Because it’s an iconic movie that made him who he is. And yet he basically hates it.

In an interview with Men’s Journal Zac said he wanted to quit after the first movie and even now wants to kick Troy Bolton’s ass.

He said: “The second we finished the first one. I was, like, 17. And I said, ‘Guys, you know this is not at all what I want to do?’ And they were like, ‘Really?’

“I step back and look at myself and I still want to kick that guy’s a** sometimes. Like, f**k that guy. He’s done some kind of cool things with some cool people — he did that one thing [‘Neighbors’] that was funny — but, I mean, he’s still just that f**king kid from [‘High School Musical’].”

Penn Badgley

Penn Badgley has had the fortune of playing two iconic liars in his career, one is a murderer and the other is Lonely Boy. However Penn really isn’t a fan of Dan Humphrey.

In 2013 he made a major dig at the show when he said he could finally do work he was proud of.

He said: “To be proud of something is a really nice feeling. And it’s a new feeling, and it’s something that I wanna keep going with. I can walk a little taller feeling that I don’t have to be constantly apologising for the work that I’ve done in the past.”

Whilst the show was on he spoke at length at how he “hated” people confusing him with Dan and called him a “judgemental douchebag”.

The Jonas brothers

Ok so I forgot the Jonas brothers even had their own sitcom show and they’re probably very grateful we’ve all forgotten as they literally hate the show.

Their Disney sitcom aptly named “Jonas” premiered on Disney Channel in 2009 and thankfully only lasted two seasons. Over the years Nick, Kevin and Joe have all spoken at length at how much they hate the show.

In 2013 Joe described the show as “slapstick humour that only a 10-year-old would laugh at”, um well it was on Disney Channel Joe?

In 2019 Nick said the show didn’t allow them to evolve and they should haven’t done the show. He said: “We shouldn’t have done that. It really stunted our growth. I feel like it was just a bad move. It was just not the time. Literally, we couldn’t evolve because of it.”

At the same time Kevin said the sitcom made them seem like a joke, “It was not on-brand for us as the band that we were becoming and the songs that we were writing. It was almost like two very different identities. I think that affected the perception of the band, that we were a joke.”

Daniel Radcliffe

Daniel Radcliffe has just returned to screens to talk about his time as Harry Potter during a reunion show. However whilst he spoke about his love and memories of the movies, he has previously spoken about his hatred for one of the films.

Daniel shared he wasn’t a fan of the sixth movie Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince because of his acting.

In an interview with Games Radar he said: “The Half-Blood Prince wasn’t my favourite instalment overall…I just hated my performance.

“The film was good, but it’s a huge amount of exposition. I think it’s the most beautiful of all the chapters… but [it’s] basically about setting up number seven.

“I just wasn’t very happy with number six in terms of my own performance.”
