Applications for The Tab’s Inclusivity Internship 2021 are now open

Applications close on 17th November

| UPDATED

Applications for The Tab Inclusivity Internship 2021 are now open and we’re looking for the best rising stars to join us at The Tab HQ.

The Inclusivity Internship is open to student writers of colour and from minority ethnic backgrounds only, so that the next generation of journalists can be more diverse.

We are offering one-week remote placements, which will involve you in every aspect of our editorial output, from breaking big stories, writing the hottest trash TV takes, creating powerful opinion pieces to managing social media. You’ll be joining a team of professional journalists – it’s great experience, and you’ll get training throughout the week.

You do not need any prior experience writing for The Tab, but you should be a committed writer (e.g. you have a blog, write for a uni paper or another publication) and be currently studying at a UK university.

Due to coronavirus, this year’s internships will be offered remotely. We have offered three rounds of remote internships throughout the pandemic, for both our Summer and Inclusivity Internship programmes. They have been a complete success, with interns joining the office (virtually) week by week for months.

For this year’s Inclusivity Internship we are accepting applications for the period of 22nd November – 10th December, with a break for Christmas, and then 10th January – 4th February 2022. Internships will be one week long each.

What will you be doing?

Every morning between 9am and 9:45am, the team trawls the internet for new stories, and at 9:45 we have our pitching meeting, where we discuss what we’ll be writing that day. The ideal candidate is someone comfortable finding original ideas for stories and confidently pitching them.

As an intern, you’ll become a member of the editorial team, and you’ll have the opportunity to write and publish multiple stories every day. You’ll be with the team (remotely) for full days, 9am-6pm, for a week. The content on our site is varied, and you should be ready to write stories like these ones produced by interns in the last year:

‘I ended up fainting on the table’: Girls recount their experiences of getting the coil

The rise and rise of The North Face puffer: Why is it the coat that just keeps growing?

I tried the same size jeans from eight shops to prove how ridiculous women’s sizing is

These gay students can now donate blood after years of being denied

Take this quiz and we’ll tell you how gross your student house is

The time has finally come to vote for the most evil uni of 2020-21

I tested apps that make your pics look like they’re taken on film to see which is best

‘It’s offensive’: Students on why pronouncing their names properly is a big deal

Make an iced coffee order and we’ll tell you what uni you should have gone to

I tried the cheesy garlic crumpets that are all over your TikTok right now

Somebody from HQ will be in regular phone contact to give you help and advice, so you’ll be brought into the team as much as is possible in these weird times.

It’s a great experience to put on your CV and will teach you loads of skills if you want a job in the media. Several student writers from last winter’s Inclusivity Internship programme now hold positions in their local university Tab teams, including Editor.

How to apply

If you are interested in applying for an internship at The Tab, please email [email protected] with answers to the following:

1) Come up with three story ideas that you think would work well on our site

An experience feature

• A fun feature (e.g. a quiz, a listicle, or a meme round up)

• A news follow-up to one of these recent Tab stories:

York Uni has run out of accommodation and is sending students to live in Hull

A woman who drunkenly stole bike thinking it was hers, is now trying to return it to its owner

There were 56 reports of spiking by injection across the UK in the last two months

2) Send links to three things you’ve written (if possible – on The Tab or elsewhere) that you’re the proudest of and in a sentence tell us why

OR, if your work hasn’t been published anywhere: Tell us, in 100 words, what you as an intern would bring to The Tab

Please write your name and which university you go to in the subject line, and indicate the dates you are available in the email.

Applications close 17th November at 11pm.

The Tab Inclusivity Internship is for students identifying as people of colour and from minority ethnic backgrounds only. We will take into consideration everyone who sends in an application, but due to demand, we can’t take on everyone. Priority will be given to those who haven’t done work experience with us before. Internships will take place remotely.
