Who was Karen Smith who episode three of The Crown is dedicated to?

A message appears at the end of episode three which reads “In memoriam, Karen Smith, 1968 – 2020”. Karen Smith worked as a location manager on The Crown, for 20 episodes from 2017 to 2019. A location manager is responsible for picking out some of the most picturesque and stunning scenes, backdrops and filming locations for a series.

And of course, the gorgeous palaces and grounds in period drama The Crown have been praised as some of the best on television. Her role would include not just sourcing, but also securing the places for filming. Given that The Crown tries to be as accurate to the Royal Family’s real life, this is no easy task.

According to her IMDb page, she’s worked on a lot of huge shows. She was location manager on Silent Witness, Little Britain, That Mitchell and Webb Look, Ashes to Ashes, Silk, My Mad Fat Diary, Whitechapel and Doctor Foster.
