McDonald’s is introducing a vegan ‘McPlant’ range and all my prayers have been answered

Vegan chicken nuggets? Yes please

McDonald’s is set to introduce a new vegan “McPlant” range from next year.

They’ve said the line will offer plant-based burgers, chicken nugget alternatives and breakfast sandwiches in 2021.

Apparently the move towards meat substitutes has been driven by concerns over meat’s effects on health, the environment and animal welfare.

“We are excited about the opportunity because we believe we have a proven, delicious-tasting product,” said Ian Borden, who heads McDonald’s international operations.

McDonald’s already sells some “accidentally vegan” items, such as their Veggie Dippers, chips and apple pie.

Other fast-food brands, such as KFC and Burger King, already offer plant-based burgers – although Burger King’s isn’t actually vegan, due to the way it’s cooked. And of course, the Greggs vegan sausage roll and vegan steak bake have achieved a cult following amongst vegans and non-vegans alike.

McDonald’s has already tested out a plant-based burger in Canada, using Beyond Meat plant-based burgers for a “P.L.T.” (plant, lettuce, tomato) burger.

McDonald’s hasn’t made it clear if Beyond Meat will be supplying this new range. However, Beyond Meat says it is, saying: “Beyond Meat and McDonald’s co-created the plant-based patty which will be available as part of their McPlant platform.”
