Who is Carlos Carrascosa?

Carlos Carrascosa is an Argentinian man, born on December 13th 1944. He is a former stockbroker, and lived in a affluent gated community, Carmel Country Club, located in Pilar, Buenos Aires. He lived there with his wife, Maria Marta Garcia Belsunce, who he married in 1971 when she was 19 and he was 27. The couple did not have any children.

On October 27th 2002, Maria Marta was found dead in their home at the age of 50. Her body was discovered in the bath by Carlos Carrascosa, who had been watching a football match with her parents.

At first it was thought to be an accident, but it was found that Maria Marta had in fact been shot five times in the head before being left in the bath. Her family then believed she had become victim to a robbery gone wrong.

However police thought the murder had been committed by Marta’s husband, Carols Carrascosa. They believed other family members had helped him to cover up the crime when it was found that glue had been used to cover her wounds.

Carlos was arrested in 2003 and went on trial for murder. It was alleged that Carrascosa killed his wife with two accomplices because she discovered he was laundering money for Mexico’s Juarez drug cartel and wanted to cover it up. He maintained his innocence but was found guilty of aggravated homicide by bond in 2004 and sentenced to life imprisonment.

He was first acquitted in 2007. This was later overturned and he was found guilty again. He spent five years in jail before being acquitted again in 2016. DNA evidence had found that he did not match the samples of blood which were found at the scene. He had always stuck by the same alibi of being elsewhere when the murder took place.

He’s also spoken out in various other media outlets. In a 2017 interview on Argentinian TV, he said prison changed him as a person, in that he had the opportunity to see “the good part of the bad men and the bad part of the good men.”

In prison, he held the record for the most visitors – 140 different people visited him whilst he was there.

In January of this year, Carlos Carrascosa released his own book. It’s titled Diario de un Inocente: Un Amor, Una Causa, Una Vida (Diary of an Innocent: One Love, One Cause, One Life) and is all about the death of his wife.

At the end of the Netflix documentary series, it says Carlos’ acquittal has been appealed by the Buenos Aires Province Public Prosecution Ministry and a new trial into the murder is set to take place. He still protests his innocence, and hopes one day investigators will find who killed Maria Marta, as the case remains unsolved.
