‘Stay Close’ is the new psychological Netflix series from the creator of The Stranger

The show will star Richard Armitage again and Harlan Coben says it’s their ‘most gripping and bingeable series yet’

Netflix is adapting another Harlan Coben best-selling novel into a psychological series, this time it’s “Stay Close”.

The show will be an eight-episode thriller, telling the story of three people living comfortable lives who each conceal dark secrets that even those closest to them would never suspect. The book is based in the US but the Netflix series will be based in the UK, and sees Richard Armitage (Adam Price from The Stranger) back in the cast.

Armitage is joined by Cush Jumbo (The Good Fight), James Nesbitt (The Missing) and Sarah Parish (Bancroft). It is also created by the same team behind The Stranger and Safe, including producer and writer, Danny Brocklehurst.

The story is about Megan (Cush Jumbo), a working mother of three, who has settled down with the kids after a once wild life. She’s got a perfect husband and a seemingly idyllic family. Ray (Richard Armitage), is a once promising documentary photographer, now stuck in a dead-end job pandering to celebrity obsessed rich kids and Broome (James Nesbitt), is a detective who’s unable to let go of a missing person’s cold case. Lorraine (Sarah Parish) is an old friend from Megan’s past, who delivers some shocking news which will impact all three characters. As the past comes back to haunt them, threatening to ruin their lives and the lives of those around them, what will be their next move?

Announcing the news, Netflix said: “Fans of The Stranger and Safe, rejoice! The next Netflix show based on @HarlanCoben‘s books will be STAY CLOSE – starring Cush Jumbo, Richard Armitage, James Nesbitt and Sarah Parish.”

Richard Armitage added: “I can’t wait to return to Manchester to work with Nicola, Danny, Harlan and the team again. I love Harlan’s style and this plot and character will be brilliantly challenging. At a time when we have remained apart; Stay Close promises to break all the rules.”

Harlan Coben said: “I am so happy and excited to Stay Close (pun intended) with Danny Brocklehurst, Nicola Shindler and Richard Fee — the same team that made The Stranger, Safe and The Five. And talk about a dream-come-true cast – Cush Jumbo, an incendiary and awesome talent; Jimmy Nesbitt, a legendary actor I always wanted to collaborate with; and wow, Richard Armitage back again! Netflix has been a wonderful home, and from what I’ve seen so far, Stay Close will be our most gripping and binge-able series yet.”

Harlan Coben has had a number of his novels adapted for Netflix, including The Stranger, The Woods and Safe. He has previously told The Tab that Netflix is working on bringing all of his books to screen in a five-year deal.
