Meet Elizabeth Debicki: The 6’3 Australian playing Diana in The Crown series five
This is some spot-on casting
Netflix has announced that Australian actor Elizabeth Debicki will be playing Princess Diana in seasons five and six of The Crown.
Although we haven’t seen Cambridge grad Emma Corrin introduced in the show as season four’s Diana, Netflix are out here announcing the next generation. It’s like Skins.
But anyway, here’s what you need to know about Elizabeth Debicki.
You might recognise her from the Great Gatsby
Debicki played Jordan, the aloof and cynical golf cheat, in Baz Luhrmann’s 2013 adaptation of The Great Gatsby.
Or the BBC’s 2016 spy thriller The Night Manager
In this tense John Le Carré adaptation, Debicki played Jed, the doomed partner of a posh British man whose life is put in danger when she’s caught up in the wheels of a machine far greater than she. A perfect fit for Diana, then.
Elizabeth Debicki is tall – 6ft3
While the Australian actor is taller than the royal she’s playing, Diana was a taller-than-average 5ft10 in real life.
Debicki will appear in the fifth series of the Crown, which set in the 90s
This time period will cover the break-up of Charles and Diana’s marriage, as well as Diana’s death in the Paris car crash.
She’ll be starring alongside Gillian Anderson, Imelda Staunton, and Jonathan Pryce
Debicki is the latest in a series of actors confirmed for the next generation of the Crown. Imelda Staunton (aka Harry Potter’s Dolores Umbridge) will be playing the Queen, Gillian Anderson (recently the star of The Fall and Sex Education) will be playing Margaret Thatcher, and Jonathan Pryce (militant media mogul Elliot Carver in Brosnan-era Bond flick Tomorrow Never Dies) will be playing Prince Philip.
As the news was announced, Debicki said “Princess Diana’s spirit, her words and her actions live in the hearts of so many. It is my true privilege and honor to be joining this masterful series which has had me absolutely hooked from episode one.”
