These celebs are getting it really wrong with their responses to Black Lives Matter

Across the US, UK, Europe, New Zealand and Canada millions of people are protesting the death of George Floyd who was killed by a police officer who knelt on his neck last week.

Joining the protests were a number of celebs who marched alongside others in support of the Black Lives Matter movement and all over Instagram and Twitter people are sharing the good deeds they are doing to help. Chrissy Teigen has donated $200,000 to bail out protesters, Janelle Monáe and Kehalni have matched donations to support the Minnesota Freedom Fund which helps with bailing out those involved in protests.

And other celebrities have been using their platforms to engage in conversations, spread awareness, giving advice on how to say safe in protests, sharing donation links and resources to educate on the Black Lives Matter movement.

However there have been a few celebs who have either actively opposed the protests like Steph Pratt, said or done tone deaf things like David Guetta making a remix track for George Floyd or others saying incredibly insensitive or ignorant comments like Kylie Jenner and Marina Diamandis.

These are the worst responses by celebrities to the Black Lives Matter movement:

Emma Watson

Long time activist Emma Watson was criticised for how she posted about Black Lives Matter on her Instagram. During Blackout Tuesday Emma posted three black squares, each with a white border around it.

Many people commented how Emma was prioritising her Instagram aesthetic by putting the border around the squares so it would match the rest of her feed that has the same borders.

One user commented: “Black Lives Matter is not an aesthetic for your Instagram.” Others commented on Emma not using her platform to provide links to useful information.

Emma responded to the backlash with a piece of artwork by her friend and said she was waiting until Blackout Tuesday had ended in the UK before providing information.

She wrote in another piece posted on Instagram how she is aware white privilege has benefited her and she will be using her platform to share resources.

Evan Peters

Evan Peters was getting dragged all over Twitter for retweeting a video of someone laughing and cheering as a police officer tackled and chased a “looter” which was accompanied by the caption: “I can watch these piece of shit looters get tackled all day!”

He got a lot of angry tweets from Twitter users saying how disappointed they were in him. Evan has now deleted his retweet of the video and the comment and apologised for retweeting it.

Evan said on Twitter: “I don’t condone the guy watching the news at all in the video which I have deleted. I unknowingly retweeted it. I’m deeply upset it got on my newsfeed. I sincerely apologize if anyone was offended. I support black lives matter wholeheartedly.”

Steph Pratt

Last night Steph Pratt went on a Twitter rampage in which she wrote a number of insensitive tweets including “shoot the looters”, “Get it together America” and “Anyone else sobbing watching their town being burned down?”.

Many people on Twitter were quick to point out that Steph had once been arrested for shoplifting in 2006 and shared her mugshot. Steph also tweeted her sympathies for people’s businesses being burnt down and questioned if coronavirus cases would rise after the protests.

Lana Del Rey

As if Lana hadn’t messed up enough last week she did it again over the weekend. Whilst attending protests in LA, Lana shared footage of looters without blurring their faces or protecting their identities to her Instagram page with over 16 million followers. Tinashe and Kehlani called her out on Twitter and asked her to remove her posts.

Tinashe said: “Why the fuck are you posting people looting stores on your page literally WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM”.

Kehlani said: “Please remove your Instagram post, it’s dangerous as fuck and a very poor choice of moments to post. By all means protest, but DO NOT endanger people with your very massive platform. Oh and turn your fucking comments on man.”

Lana has since deleted the video and both Tinashe and Kehlani have deleted their tweets asking her to take them down. Tinashe tweeted thanking Lana for deleting them.

David Guetta

David Guetta decided his response would be to create a remix, throw a shout out to George Floyd and resample Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream” speech.

This performance was part of a stream at home concert aimed at raising funds for coronavirus victims.

Matty Healy

Is there any surprise Matty Healy is on this list? Last week he tweeted his support for the Black Lives Matter movement with a link to a 1975 music video, as he felt the video could sum up his feelings better on the subject.

He tweeted: “If you truly believe that ‘all lives matter’ you need to stop facilitating the end of black ones” with the video.

After receiving a lot if backlash he then deleted the tweet and apologised, before subsequently putting out the tweet again without the video and tweeting out the video in a separate tweet a few minutes later.

Naturally it didn’t go down well and Matty deactivated his Twitter account.

Marina Diamandis

Last night Marina Diamandis tweeted: “You have to be mentally ill to be a cop.”

A LOT of people in the comments were not impressed and criticised her for “demonising” mental illnesses and comparing it to police brutality. Many pointed out how people suffering with mental health issues, particularly black people with mental health problems are at high risk of police violence.

Kylie Jenner

Whilst many of us have been focusing on ways to help and show support for the Black Lives Matter movement, Kylie Jenner has been tweeting about how she actually is a billionaire after Forbes accused her of lying and forging tax returns.

In a series of tweets on Friday Kylie cristied Forbes for their “inaccurate statements”, asked them for “proof” and questioned how “reputable” Forbes is.

She said: “What am I even waking up to. I thought this was a reputable site.. all I see are a number of inaccurate statements and unproven assumptions lol. I’ve never asked for any title or tried to lie my way there EVER. Period.”

“’Even creating tax returns that were likely forged’ that’s your proof? So you just THOUGHT they were forged? Like actually what am I reading.”

Kylie then moved on to say how she is blessed before eventually saying there are far more important things than how much money she has. She said: “I can name a list of 100 things more important right now than fixating on how much money I have.”

Someone on Twitter than replied to Kylie’s tweets about Forbes and asked: “This is what you’re worried about right now?” to which Kylie replied: “This is literally the LAST thing I’m worried about right now.”

Another user asked use her platform to speak up on everything that is going on, to which Kylie replied: “I did”.

She has since shared a number of petition and donation links on her Instagram and Twitter.

Kendall Jenner and Cara Delevingne

Kendall and Cara are just a number of celebs involved in a Instagram trend where they tag each other on their Instagram stories to form a “chain”.

Ellen DeGeneres

Ellen has been getting dragged a lot recently for her tone deaf comments and the Black Lives Matter movement is no different. Over the weekend she tweeted: “Like so many of you, I am angry and I am sad. People of colour in this country have faced injustice for far too long. For things to change, things must change. We must commit ourselves to this change with conviction and with love.”

Her tweet was criticised for not referring to black people and just being purely insensitive. She has since deleted the tweet and tweeted a number of organisations that she is donating to.

Gemma Collins

The GC has come under fire for her comments she made over the weekend. On Instagram she uploaded a video from her hot tub, where she said: “It’s terrible what’s going on, what we’re seeing at the moment, but love will conquer” and “all lives do matter”.

Gemma has since deleted the video and shared on her Twitter ways your can support the Black Lives Matter movement.

Kelly Chase from Love Is Blind

Kelly from Netflix’s Love Is Blind pissed a lot of people off with her comments on Instagram over the weekend. On her Instagram story she posted a video in which she called black people “coloured people” and said the protests were too much.

She said: “Black lives fucking matter, absolutely. But this weekend, the last 48 hours the riots went fucking crazy, shitstorm.

“What happened to George Floyd and every other coloured person if I wanna use that. I hate describing people by their [skin colour].”

Kelly faced a lot of criticism from Carlton, her cast mate from Love Is Blind, who shared her comments on his own Instagram and accused some of the other Love is Blind cast as “racist”.

She has since apologised for her words and acknowledges that she has been ignorant. In a video Kelly said: “I used the terms coloured people and All Lives Matter and I realise how ignorant that was, how uneducated I am and I’m really, truly sorry for the pain that I caused today because I realise that there are people hurting because of what happened with George Floyd and every other black person who is scared.

“It was definitely coming from a place of love and that I am truly, truly sorry, I never meant to offend you, hurt you, hurt anyone from the black community.

“I am just very, very sorry. I am educating myself on what I can do to help.”
