Here’s what you need to watch on Netflix right now, according to what’s most popular
Here are your weekend plans sorted
Do you ever just get that feeling you’ve completed Netflix? Like you scroll through absolutely everything on your homepage but there’s NOTHING there? We’ve all felt it. What to watch on Netflix is a real struggle sometimes.
But surprise surprise – there are actually tonnes of really great shows on there right now. So here’s a succinct list of what you should be watching on Netflix, according to what is most popular and what everyone is talking about at the moment.
1. Never Have I Ever
Never Have I Ever has been reviewed as the “best teen comedy to date”. It tells the story of 15-year-old Devi, an Indian girl growing up in America. She’s having to deal with the usual teen struggles such as school, friendships and having a massive crush on the school’s heartthrob. But on top of that, she’s seeing a therapist to help her deal with the recent loss of her father.
The show has one of the most diverse casts on screen right now and it’s been praised for how well written it is. If that doesn’t sell Never Have I Ever to you, it has perfectly bingeable half an hour episodes and Paxton the heartthrob is extremely easy on the eye.
It seems like fans of Afterlife basically paused everything until season two was released this week. If you haven’t watched any of it, this is definitely the sort of show you should invest some time in.
The synopsis says: “Struggling to come to terms with his wife’s death, a writer for a newspaper adopts a gruff new persona in an effort to push away those trying to help.” Season one is basically Ricky Gervais being angry and depressed but also very funny, and season two adds even more humour and widens the characters further.
3. Dangerous Lies
Dangerous Lies is a new Netflix Original thriller film featuring Camila Mendes, who you’ll probably recognise as Veronica from Riverdale. She plays Katie Franklin who, after losing her waitressing job, takes a job as a caretaker to a wealthy elderly man in his empty Chicago estate. They grow close, but then he unexpectedly passes away and leaves her everything he owned. This leaves Katie and her husband pulled into a huge web of lies, secrets and murder.
Right now, everyone is talking about Netflix film Extraction. It shot straight into the Netflix top 10 list the day it was released and has been getting quite varied reviews.
The action thriller stars Chris Hemsworth and the synopsis says: “A hardened mercenary’s mission becomes a soul-searching race to survive when he’s sent to Bangladesh to rescue a drug-lord’s kidnapped son.”
5. The Last Kingdom
The Last Kingdom is also high up on Netflix’s top 10 list, in the UK. Season four was released last weekend, but that doesn’t mean you’re too late to catch up from the start if you haven’t ever watched it.
The Last Kingdom is a British historical fiction television series based on Bernard Cornwell’s The Saxon Stories series of books. It’s based primarily in Hungary, set in the late 9th century AD, when England was divided into seven separate kingdoms. It follows the life of Uhtred, a Saxon boy who’s raised by Danes after they capture him and take him with them. If you love Game of Thrones, you’ll probably enjoy this.
6. Murder to Mercy: The Cyntoia Brown Story
Murder to Mercy is a new Netflix Original true crime documentary about a case that shocked the world. The hour and a half film explores the true story of what happened to Cyntoia Brown when she was found guilty of first degree murder. She killed a man when she was 16-years-old but she was a victim of abuse and sex trafficking and said she was acting out of self defence.
Cyntoia’s case soon gained traction as being a huge miscarriage of justice. Celebrities such as Rihanna, Kim Kardashian and Drake supported her on social media, promoting a movement to have her freed from prison.
7. Too Hot To Handle
If you haven’t already watched Too Hot To Handle seriously where have you been? It’s Netflix’s latest dating experiment show – and if you thought Love Is Blind was wild, strap in for this one. The premise is quite simple: take a whole bunch of horny single people, stick them all in an amazing villa and then tell them they can’t touch each other. If they do, the prize fund at the end will get lower and lower.
The show is wild, the memes are incredible and it’s definitely going to fill the reality TV shaped hole there’s been in your life recently.
8. A Secret Love
A Secret Love is another new Netflix Original documentary. The film tells the story of two elderly women, who kept their relationship secret for over 60 years. The pair met in 1947, when attitudes towards homosexuality were very different to how they are today. They spent 62 years as secret spouses before coming out to their families when they were in their 80s.
Prepare to ugly cry at this one, it will pull on your heartstrings.
9. Modern Family
In quite possibly the best news at the moment, Modern Family has just been added to Netflix. The 10 season show follows the lives of three interconnected families. The three modern-day families from California try to deal with their kids, quirky spouses and jobs in their own unique ways, often falling into hilarious situations. Your weekend just got a whole lot better.
10. New Girl
All 146 episodes of New Girl have just been added to Netflix. New Girl is an American sitcom that first came out in 2011. It stars Zooey Deschanel as Jess, a teacher who has moved into a loft with three guys in LA. The seven seasons follow their lives and mainly focuses on their romantic relationships and the people moving in and out of the loft. If you haven’t watched it already, prepare to become obsessed. And if you’ve already watched it, you should probably watch it again.
