Ranked: The STEM subjects with the most female students

It’s not engineering, don’t worry

Fewer than one in five computer science students are female, utterly unsurprising official stats show.

However, in some STEM subjects over three quarters of students are female.

The Tab analysed data from HESA for the 2018/19 academic year, and found that subjects allied to medicine and veterinary science have the highest proportion of female students.

Meanwhile, in a shock to nobody, engineering and computer science are over 80 per cent male.

Figures show some STEM subjects have seen numbers of female students shoot up in recent years, and there is hope yet for some of the most male-dominated subjects.

Data compiled by theknowledgeacademy.com shows the number of women studying computer science increased by 11.6 per cent in a single year, whilst the number of women opting for engineering and technology increased by 5 per cent from 2017/18 to 2018/19.
