The latest Netflix series to get everyone talking is creepy, mind-bending drama, Locke & Key. It’s been described by viewers as “crazy” and “intriguing and thrilling”. So if you’ve binged watched it all already, here are 11 series like Locke and Key which you are guaranteed to enjoy just as much.

Netflix’s Locke and Key is based on a series of comic books by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez. It is listed on Netflix as a fantasy, teen drama which is “witty” and “irreverent”. The following list is full of similar series, which are equally as mind-blowing, full of drama or based on clever, twisted books and comics.

The Stranger

If you like the thriller and drama aspect of Locke and Key, The Stranger is another series on Netflix which is just like that. The Stranger is a psychological thriller about a father, Adam Price, who seems to have a pretty perfect life with his family. But their cosy life is turned upside down when ‘The Stranger’ (Hannah John-Kamen) approaches Adam in a bar and says his wife had faked a pregnancy, adding: “If I were you I’d run DNA checks on your two boys.” There are countless further twists and turns and it’s the type of drama you will struggle to switch off.

The Stranger knows everything about everyone and the ending will leave you shook. Season one has eight episodes and is on Netflix now. The Stranger is based on the bestselling novel by Harlan Coben.

Season two of You has been the Netflix series everyone has been talking about this year. So if you haven’t watched either of the seasons which are currently available, where have you been?? Each season follows Joe Goldberg and his crazy, stalker-ish love obsessions. There’s murder, sex, suspense and shocks throughout.

The Netflix synopsis for season one reads: “What would you do for love? For a brilliant male bookstore manager who crosses paths with an aspiring female writer, this question is put to the test. A charming yet awkward crush becomes something even more sinister when the writer becomes the manager’s obsession. Using social media and the internet, he uses every tool at his disposal to become close to her, even going so far as to remove any obstacle –including people — that stands in his way of getting to her.”

Without any spoilers, season two sees Joe pack up and move to L.A in an attempt to leave his ghosts from season one behind. You is based on the book series by Caroline Kepnes. 

Lucifer

Lucifer is another fantasy crime drama. There’s currently one season on Netflix, with 10 episodes, but more seasons have been confirmed. The show is about Lucifer, a demon, who returns from hell to live in Los Angeles and run a club. He soon gets involved with the local police and assists them in solving tricky criminal cases.

It’s got Tom Ellis in it, what more could you want?

Ragnarok

Netflix released Ragnarok in January 2020. The story involves a young teen who will embody the Norse god to save a Norwegian town from the End Times. It’s based a lot on Norse mythology but styled into a high school drama.

The synopsis says: “In a Norwegian town poisoned by pollution and rattled by melting glaciers, the End Times feel all too real. It’ll take a legend to battle an old evil.”

October Faction

October Faction is a Netflix original series based on the comic of the same name from Steve Niles and Damien Worm. There’s currently one season with 10 episodes available.

October Faction follows Fred and Deloris, a husband and wife team of supernatural monster hunters who attempt to hunt down monsters whilst hiding their occupation from their neighbours and twin children. They move back to their home town, which is filled with supernatural monsters, and we find out the children have their own secrets too.

The show has been called “crazy”, and “identical to Locke and Key”.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

If you loved watching Sabrina The Teenage Witch as a child, this is the Netflix series for you. Sabrina follows a young half-human, half-witch as she deals with the growing pressures of high school and her family’s legacy, the Church of the Night. It is based on the comic series of the same name.

Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments

Shadowhunters is a teen drama which follows “typical teen” Clary Fray. She learns she comes from a long line of human-angel hybrids who are tasked with hunting demons and monsters. The show is categorised as fantasy and sci-fi. Just like Locke and Key, Shadowhunters is also based on a book.  It is based on The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare and is the first of the Shadowhunter Chronicles.

Dark

Dark is all about two children who go missing in a small German town. This exposes the town’s sinful past, along with the double lives and fractured relationships that exist among four families as they search for the missing children.

The series is listed as mystery thriller that is “mind-bending, chilling and ominous”. Dark is the first German original series produced for Netflix. There are currently two seasons of Dark on Netflix.

A Series of Unfortunate Events

You definitely read the books or watched the film as a child, and the Netflix series based on Lemony Snicket’s novels is just as good. There are three seasons of the Netflix original adaptation following the Baudelaire orphans.

If you didn’t read the books or see the film, the Netflix synopsis describes the series as: “The extraordinary Baudelaire orphans face trials, tribulations and the evil Count Olaf in their fateful quest to unlock long-held family secrets.”

Mindhunter

Mindhunter is a chilling, horror, mystery drama. It is based on the 1996 book Mind Hunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit, by former special agent John Douglas and Mark Olshaker.

It follows two FBI agents who expand criminal science by looking into the psychology of murder. The agents are tasked with interviewing serial killers to solve other open cases after a new type of killer emerges – one with no specific motive. This leaves a huge gap in investigations. In order to expand their knowledge of why killers do what they do, they have to speak to those who commit these crimes themselves.

There is currently two seasons of Mindhunter on Netflix – the first has 10 episodes and the second has nine.

The Sinner

The Sinner is a crime-mystery Netflix original series. It’s described on the site as “suspenseful” and the psychologically twisted story is based on the 1999 novel with the same name by German crime author, Petra Hammesfahr.

The Netflix synopsis for the show reads: “When a chilling murder sends shockwaves through a small town, a haunted detective’s hunt for answers unravels a web of sinister secrets.” There are currently two seasons of The Sinner available on Netflix, each with eight episodes which are around 40-50 minutes long.
