The best winter skincare products to buy on a student budget

Because chapped lips aren’t limited to the rich

Winter weather sucks – it’s cold, it’s wet and it’s annoyingly unpredictable. So, I’ve done some in-depth research (basically a Google search) and found the best winter skincare products to deal with it all. Because, honestly, after a summer spent soaking up the global warming-induced heatwave, anything below 20 degrees and I go into full hibernation mode.

Yes, you can try and dress the part but there’s always going to be a lil’ bit of skin bared to the world – whether that’s an ankle, red nose or just your eyelids – that’s going to suffer because of the cold.

So, whether you’re sick of chapped lips or freaking out about the fact your skin is somehow now oily and dry (no, just me?), here’s a list of the best winter skincare products to get you through the term:

Vitamin C Skincare Reviver

After battling the elements and make it across campus, your skin is probably looking pretty tired (frankly, everything about you probably is – alcohol’s parting gift is not kind). Use this cream to give yourself a bit of a booster and let its light-reflective particles help your skin glow.

NIVEA MicellAIR Professional Make-Up Remover

When your skin is feeling all wind-chapped and sore, the last thing you want to do is scrub at it with some dodgy, probably full of chemicals, face wipes.

Avoid that ever-so-slightly traumatic event by using this super gentle makeup remover (that will even get rid of the waterproof eyeliner you used for that 80s-themed sports social you went to). No rubbing or rinsing needed – which means extra sleep time. Winning.

Bulldog Sensitive Shave Cream

Whether you’re clean-shaven or rocking an iconic handlebar moustache for Movember, there’s going to be some sections of your face that you want shaving (maybe even a monobrow or two?).  So, to make sure you treat your winter-worn skin right, use this shave cream with Aloe Vera and Shea Butter, which hydrates and minimises drying, to leave your skin silky smooth.

Vanilla Pumpkin Handcream

Okay, so the only downside of this hand cream is that it’s probably going to make you feel hungry every time you wear it. But, on the plus side, it will help you get your pumpkin-spiced latte fix without having to actually buy one (those things can get seriously pricey).

This cream is one of the best winter skincare products for the annoying cold-weather habit of between-finger dryness – you know, the weird webbed bit that gets all cracked and sore because you can’t be bothered to dry your hands properly – and is an absolute necessity when you’re writing out notes in a freezing cold lecture hall.

NIVEA Rich 48hr Nourishing Body Lotion

With the neverending trend of ankle-length trousers and trainer socks, it’s guaranteed that you’ll get dry ankles at some point and, because the body is weird, dry elbows. Seriously, what sort of evolutionary purpose does that serve?! So, annoying.

Luckily, for a measly £3.00, you can stay hydrated all winter long with Nivea’s 48hr moisturiser (just in case you miss a moisturising sesh one day) – one of the best winter skincare products around.

Dear, Klairs Midnight Blue Calming Sheet Mask

Winter not only means cold weather, but it also means darkness – 4pm, but-seems-like-the-middle-of-the-night type darkness. Which means sometimes all you feel like doing is hiding under your duvet and taking a nap.

So, when this mood hits, add a sheet mask into the mix and treat yourself to some proper R&R before you get out of your PJs and head to pres. These are good the morning after too if you need a quick refresh to lighten the dark bags under your eyes.

Hemp Heavy Duty Lip Care

This is your new go-to lip salve for when vaseline just isn’t cutting it. Packed with hemp seed oil to soothe and hydrate, this chapstick is specifically designed for really dry lips.

Plus, it’s perfect if you’re planning on some romantic makeout seshes in the snow (or on an ice-rink somewhere, in an empty lecture hall, in the smoking area of the grungy club all your mates like… etc.).

Australian Bodycare Active Face Cream

For anyone who’s skin is getting dried out by the cold winds, but is still getting spots (biology sucks) this combi-moisturiser with Tea Tree will help remove the bacteria inflaming your skin and smooth the dry patches. Plus, at only £4.50, it’s well worth the mini-investment!

So there you go, just a short list of the best winter skincare products to make sure you survive the winter as your fully fabulous self. Don’t worry, April (aka spring sunshine) isn’t that far away. We can do this.
