We're officially getting a Game of Thrones prequel series, offering a chance to fix the wrongs of season eight.

HBO announced it has ordered a full series of "House of the Dragon", a series set 300 years before Game of Thrones.

Telling the story of House Targaryen, House of the Dragon will also go into the early days of Westeros.

However, HBO has cancelled another Game of Thrones prequel.

The unnamed pilot, detailing the rise of the White Walkers and starring Naomi Watts, was set thousands of years before Game of Thrones, but will now never see the light of day.

"It's my pleasure to announce today that we are ordering House of the Dragon straight to series for HBO," Casey Bloys, president of HBO programming said.

In good news for fans of good tv episodes, Miguel Sapochnik is joint showrunner. He directed some of Games of Thrones' best episodes – Hardhome, Battle of the Bastards, and The Long Night.

Sure, we should know better than to hold high hopes at this point. But here we are, having high hopes. Who'd have thought?
