These social media reactions to the male romper are hilarious, and masculinity is hella fragile

‘Yo, lookin’ real thicc in that romper daddy!!’

2017 truly is the year of innovation. Reality stars are presidents, they grew that sheep in an artificial womb, and men can at last reclaim the last bastion of gender specific fashion: the romper.

Although the male romper has been around since the 60s – when Sean Connery rocked it in between his light domestic abuse of love interests as James Bond – it’s now back with a new fratboylite twist. And as people woke up to the news yesterday, social media subsequently became 99 per cent romper jokes.

Alongside the truly hilarious jokes though, there’s an undercurrent of resistance for something that’s seen as at once a ridiculous fashion choice and also inherently feminine.

Following one viral tweet which repeatedly wrote “rompers are NOT for straight men”, one man replied: “So if you wear a romper you’re gonna turn gay or something? Wow your masculinity is so fragile I feel sorry for you.” Attn writes: “This line of male rompers is a huge step in knocking down walls and definitions of what’s masculine and feminine as these ideals continue to evolve.”

Not only are rompers slowly chipping away at the toxic aspects of fragile modern masculinity, but they’ve also inspired some truly great jokes. Enjoy the curated collection here:
