Science has proven it, menstrual cramps are as painful as having a heart attack

I knew it

Science does great things; cures diseases, puts people in space, ends the years of whining about women “overreacting” about period pain.

In fact research from a new study from UCL found that menstrual pain can be “as bad as having a heart attack”. John Guillebaud, a professor of reproductive health at the university and saviour of all women who have struggled with period pain, said: “Men don’t get it and it hasn’t been given the centrality it should have. I do believe it’s something that should be taken care of, like anything else in medicine.”

Dr Imogen Shaw, a GP specialising in women’s healthcare, welcomed his comments, saying: “I wouldn’t say [period pain] has been hugely investigated,” and when asked if the issue would be taken more seriously if men experienced it, said: “I suspect there would be, being very cynical.”

It’s true that periods don’t stop you doing things completely – someone tell that to the guy worried about 68-year-old Hillary Clinton having PMS in the Oval Office – they can often make life more difficult. It’s a fact people don’t talk about, primarily because women are afraid of looking whiny, overdramatic, weak.

But the stigma around periods is finally decreasing, thanks to research like this and amazing women like Fu Yuanhui, the Chinese swimmer who openly spoke about having her period at the Olympics – and how pissed off she was about it.

  • And it gets even better; an article for the Independent argues the new research definitively proves that it’s bullshit that we don’t take period pain seriously; pointing out that women wait an average of 65 minutes to be treated for abdominal pain, while men are seen by doctors for the same pain in just 49 minutes.

It’s not women being overdramatic, the pain is real and now science has proved it. Thanks science.
