Can you pass the 2016 Australian citizenship test?

It’s harder than you think

The Australian government has a notoriously tough stance on immigration, one which has come under public scrutiny in recent weeks due to horror stories from Nauru – an island used to house refugees described by the Guardian as a “dumping ground” and the New York Times as “ruthlessly effective” and “inhumane.”

But what makes an Australian citizen, in the eyes of the law? Like many countries, Australia employs a citizenship test as a way of vetting those who wish to live on their shores – and it’s probably harder than you think.

According to the Department of Immigration and Border Protection, being able to answer 75 per cent on the test, or 15 out of 20 randomly selected questions, constitutes an acceptable level of “citizenship.”

Take this quiz, based on questions used in the actual citizenship test, to see how you fare.
