Mormon Wives’ Demi Engemann<\/a> is getting backlash after revealing she “couldn’t take up space” because her brother, who has Down syndrome, has needs that came first in the family. She opened up in The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives<\/a> finale about her childhood.<\/p>\n

She revealed that her brother had a lot of medical complications, and claimed that her feelings of not wanting to take up space is a \u201ctrauma response.\u201d Demi said: “People don\u2019t see that struggle and see that battle but that\u2019s been a very real thing for me.”<\/p>\n

Demi also referred to it as \u201cGlass Child Syndrome.\u201d A \u201cglass child\u201d refers to a sibling of someone with disabilities or a chronic illness. It\u2019s called \u201cglass\u201d not because they\u2019re fragile but because they can feel as if they\u2019re see-through or made of glass.<\/p>\n
