Explaining the tragic East of Eden ending"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">*Warning: Spoilers ahead for East of Eden*<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Netflix\u2019s East of Eden is easily one of the best TV shows of the year, not least thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/tag\/florence-pugh\/\">Florence Pugh\u2019s<\/a> award-worthy performance as Cathy Ames. But one question that lingers on from the original book is why she left her fortune to her estranged son Aron.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The story started its life in the mind of Nobel Prize winning author John Steinbeck, who considered his 1952 <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/tag\/east-of-eden\/\">East of Eden<\/a> novel his magnum opus. While there have been multiple adaptations over the years, the latest from writer and co-showrunner Zoe Kazan remains faithful to much of the original story while offering a more modern interpretation of what made Cathy the way she is.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Steinbeck\u2019s novel, Cathy is introduced as an almost inherently evil figure, with the narrator even questioning whether she was born a \u201cmonster\u201d. Kazan\u2019s adaptation doesn\u2019t excuse the horrific things she goes on to do, but instead re-examines moments from her childhood that Steinbeck originally used as evidence of her wickedness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That includes the suggestion Cathy was sexually abused as a child, with the series reinterpreting her fascination with Alice in Wonderland and desire to shrink herself &#8211; details taken from Steinbeck\u2019s novel &#8211; as signs of childhood trauma and dissociation.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9937\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9937\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9937\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/10\/13-1.jpg\" alt=\"Cathy hugging young Cathy in Netflix's East of Eden\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/10\/13-1.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/10\/13-1-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/10\/13-1-768x403.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9937\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: Netflix<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While these changes add more context to Cathy\u2019s actions, the sprawling story remains intact. That includes her marriage to Adam Trask (Christopher Abbott), and the birth of their twin sons, Cal (Joseph Zada) and Aron (Joe Anders).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She never wanted to have those children, and so she cold-bloodedly shoots her husband and abandons them all (Adam survives, but pines after her for many years after).&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cathy eventually reinvents herself as Kate and takes control of a brothel, while Adam raises their sons, who believe she\u2019s dead. When they move nearby, Cal discovers the truth about his mother and repeatedly seeks her out at the brothel, while Aron remains completely unaware that she\u2019s still alive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But when the two boys get into an argument, Cal angrily takes his brother to see Cathy, leading to a gut-wrenching reunion. Aron storms out and joins the US army to fight in the First World War, where he tragically dies.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just before the Trasks find out this devastating bit of news, Cathy &#8211; who has been slowly losing her sanity &#8211; takes her own life. She leaves behind her will, and despite having had the most interaction with Cal, she names Aron the beneficiary of her fortune.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>So, why did Cathy leave everything to Aron?<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9932\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9932\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9932\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/10\/5-3.jpg\" alt=\"Aron in Netflix's East of Eden\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/10\/5-3.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/10\/5-3-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/10\/5-3-768x403.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9932\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: Netflix<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s an answer that isn\u2019t explicitly given in the <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/2026\/10\/01\/true-story-behind-netflixs-east-of-eden-as-its-inspired-by-john-steinbecks-real-family\/\">East of Eden book<\/a>, but one of the most convincing readings is that Aron\u2019s visit provokes something in Cathy that she\u2019s never experienced before: a genuine maternal feeling and the recognition of something good that she lacks within her.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s telling is that in the book &#8211; and in the <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/tag\/netflix\/\">Netflix<\/a> series &#8211; Cathy\u2019s mind had been deteriorating, but it\u2019s only after meeting Aron for the first time since abandoning her boys that she makes the decision to kill herself.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As she\u2019s recalling both Aron and Cal\u2019s faces the night prior, she thinks, \u201cThey had something she lacked, and she didn\u2019t know what it was. Once she knew this, she was ready; and once ready, she knew she had been ready for a long time &#8211; perhaps all of her life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Up until this point, Cathy has always been sure that she understands people better than they understand themselves, believing that underneath it all, everyone is capable of the same cruelty and corruption as her.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9934\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9934\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9934\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/10\/7-2.jpg\" alt=\"Cathy in Netflix's East of Eden\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/10\/7-2.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/10\/7-2-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/10\/7-2-768x403.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9934\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: Netflix<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.steinbeckintheschools.com\/east-of-eden-reading-guides\/character-summaries\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Steinbeck in the Schools<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> writes in her character summary, \u201cThe meetings, along with growing paranoia about the evil deeds of her past resurfacing, cause Kate to question herself.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHaving always been self-assured in her isolation from what she saw as great depravity in other people, she begins to wonder if perhaps it is she who is different. Particularly, her meeting with Aron, who is brought to her out of revenge by his angry and rejected brother, brings this fact into relief.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In that sense, leaving Aron her fortune could be read as Cathy\u2019s final attempt to make amends for abandoning him. But as is the case with any big decision in life, there are bound to be multiple motivations.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Steinbeck deliberately makes her motive ambiguous, something Kazan spoke about in a conversation with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/creative-content\/tv-shows\/east-of-eden-netflix-florence-pugh-zoe-kazan-interview\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Wrap<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. When asked about the inheritance, she replied, \u201cI also ask that question, and I don\u2019t know. That is a mystery to me, and I love that about it. It\u2019s not just one thing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>There could be another reason Cathy chooses Aron over Cal<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9933\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9933\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9933\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/10\/6-3.jpg\" alt=\"Cal and Aron in Netflix's East of Eden\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/10\/6-3.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/10\/6-3-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/10\/6-3-768x403.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9933\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: Netflix<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One interpretation extends the theory, suggesting that Cathy sees a vulnerability in Aron but also recognises herself in Cal &#8211; and as a final act, she gives Aron the money as she knows Cal can fend for himself.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A reader shared this idea on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/books\/comments\/byaipu\/just_finished_east_of_eden_i_just_need_to_talk\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reddit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after reading East of Eden, writing, \u201cI felt Cathy with her last act, showed her only notion of\u2026 motherhood? She gave her fortune to Aron. Maybe she saw in him the weaker of her sons. The one who couldn\u2019t make a small fortune for the fun of it (much like Adam couldn\u2019t).&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt was an act of love. She saw him for who he was. Everyone else saw him and loved him, was so impressed by him. She saw through it. Ultimately knowing he would be the one to need her help.\u201d They added that she knew Cal enough to know he wouldn\u2019t need the money.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A perfect example of this in the story is when Cal decides he wants to make his father\u2019s fortune back from the failed business, and he does so quite easily through his investment in beans during the war.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From this perspective, leaving Aron everything isn\u2019t necessarily about loving him <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than Cal. Cathy may simply understand that Cal possesses the same ability to survive that she does, while Aron doesn&#8217;t &#8211; and her fortune is the only protection she can leave him.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9931\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9931\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9931\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/10\/4-4.jpg\" alt=\"Cal in Netflix's East of Eden\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/10\/4-4.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/10\/4-4-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.filmshrine.com\/uploads\/2026\/10\/4-4-768x403.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9931\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: Netflix<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, the cruel irony in this isn\u2019t just that Aron dies before inheriting his mother\u2019s fortune. It\u2019s also that the money itself came from the brothel and through Cathy exploiting the people around her.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adam refuses to accept Cal\u2019s bean money knowing he\u2019s been sending young men to war, and Aron &#8211; a character who is arguably even more obsessed with goodness and purity &#8211; would simply not have been capable of accepting the tainted wealth.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The irony isn\u2019t lost on Lee (Hoon Lee) in the <a href=\"https:\/\/thetab.com\/filmshrine\/tag\/book\/page\/2\/\">novel<\/a>. After learning about Cathy\u2019s will, he \u201claughed to himself\u201d imagining \u201cAron, whose purity was a little on the self-indulgent side, living all his life on the profits from a whorehouse.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He then wonders: \u201cWas this some kind of joke or did things balance so that if one went too far in one direction an automatic slide moved on the scale and the balance was reestablished?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This has led to an altogether darker interpretation of Cathy\u2019s will.
