Slow Horses season 6 has introduced us to plenty of new faces (and the return of a very familiar one<\/a>), but one of the biggest scene-stealers so far has to be Reece Nesmith.<\/span><\/p>\n

Played by Lenny Rush, Reece officially debuted in season 6 episode 3 of the Apple TV<\/a> series after briefly being spotted fleeing the scene of his father Andrew\u2019s murder in the previous episode.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman) and Roddy Ho (Christopher Chung) eventually track him down and take him into their own version of \u201cprotective custody\u201d, with Reece quickly proving he\u2019s more than capable of holding his own against the Slough House agents.<\/span><\/p>\n

But fans of Mick Herron\u2019s original novels may have noticed he\u2019s completely different from the character we meet in the books. And it turns out the change was actually made for a very specific reason.<\/span><\/p>\n

Slow Horses changed Reece after Lenny Rush was suggested for the role<\/h2>\n

Yes, rather than simply adapting the story for the screen, the real reason for the book change was due to the producers simply admiring Lenny Rush\u2019s work and wanting to find a way to make Reece work. <\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking to <\/span>TV Insider<\/span><\/a>, Slow Horses co-executive producer Gaby Chiappe explained, \u201cWe were all talking about it in the writers\u2019 room, and one of the producers suddenly said Lenny\u2019s name, and everybody got really excited at the thought of that.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat that gives you, what the show hasn\u2019t had before – you always want the show to be the show that the audience love, but it\u2019s good to bring in new things. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s not been a young character, a very young character before, and everybody, I think, was familiar with Lenny\u2019s work and just thought, \u2018Oh God, that would be brilliant.\u2019 And then you start thinking, \u2018Lenny and Ho, Lenny and Gary Oldman, that is very exciting.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

This meant rewriting Reece\u2019s story. In the books, he\u2019s an adult whose partner is killed, leading him to turn to Lamb and the rest of Slough House for answers. But the Apple TV series instead introduces him as a teenager whose father – one of the Park\u2019s \u201cDogs\u201d – is murdered, leaving Reece as a key witness.<\/span><\/p>\n

Making him a teenager also completely changes the dynamic between him and the adults of Slough House, and to great comedic effect. Honestly, I could watch an entire episode of Roddy giving \u201cinspiring\u201d life lessons to his reluctant \u201cPadawan\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n

But the basic function of the character remains the same: a violent death drags him into the wider mystery about who is targeting Slough House<\/a>. Given his father\u2019s killer – River\u2019s (Jack Lowden) evil dad, Frank Harkness (Hugo Weaving)<\/a> – knows he\u2019s a witness, Lamb and Roddy take him away to safety in the latest episode. <\/span><\/p>\n

Who is Lenny Rush? <\/h2>\n

Despite being one of the youngest additions to the Slow Horses<\/a> cast, Rush already has an impressive career behind him.<\/span><\/p>\n

The 17-year-old actor won a BAFTA TV Award for his performance as Ollie in Daisy May Cooper\u2019s Am I Being Unreasonable?, while his previous credits also include Doctor Who, Dodger, Best Interests, Renegade Nell and Enola Holmes 2.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rush has spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita, a form of dwarfism, and has spoken openly about both his condition and disability representation throughout his career.<\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking to <\/span>The Guardian<\/span><\/a> in 2023, Rush explained that his condition can affect his \u201csight, walking, stamina, balance and hearing\u201d, and revealed he had undergone several operations, including spinal surgery.<\/span><\/p>\n

He also spoke about wanting his career to help improve representation for people with dwarfism, particularly after growing up with relatively few actors with the same condition to look up to.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere weren\u2019t too many people out there,\u201d he said, naming Warwick Davis – who has the same condition – alongside actors including Peter Dinklage and the late Verne Troyer.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere should be more. Perhaps that is one of the reasons why I do acting – to get a bit of representation out there and hopefully encourage people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

At the same time, Rush has been clear that he doesn\u2019t want his disability to determine the kinds of characters he can play. Discussing his future as an adult actor, he told the outlet he wouldn\u2019t want to find himself restricted to playing fantasy characters because of his dwarfism, adding: \u201cYou don\u2019t want to get typecast as something because of your disability.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

And his career certainly isn\u2019t slowing down. After joining Slow Horses, Rush has now been cast as Dobby in HBO\u2019s new Harry Potter adaptation, with the character set to make his debut in season 2.<\/span><\/p>\n
